Posted this question before, but never had time to respond to others. We are in Simi Valley CA and thinking of heading to somewhere in Baja for Jan, Feb and March. Any ideas wold be appreciated.

The first thing I would do is purchase the Mike and Terri's 'Guide to Camping in Mexico's Baja'. I've been camping all around Main land Mexico using there book. Great Book, no problems ever. If you like to fish, I'm sure you'll love the Baja.

Investigated going to guayamos on the mainland last year. The insurance costs stopped us from going. It was on the order of $1200 for a month. Our plan was to be gone about 5 weeks. Insurance on the order $350 more of staying like 3 months total.

Insurance - something is not right. Check out Vagabundos Del Mar () www.vagabundos.com. Can't remember for sure but that's what I paid for the car for a yr. In 2012 I paid around $2500 for a yr. Membership costs $35.00

Tom, there I a group within the Escapee organization called the "Mexican Connection". They have a rally in Mexico every year, usually in February. This year they are spending about 3-weeks in Baja with a rolling rally that will end in Guerrero Negro which is halfway down the Baja peninsula near the border between Baja North and Baja South. You can then return with others or continue traveling with others.
A major event of this particular rally will be experiencing face-to-face contact with the grey whales in Scammon's Lagoon. It's a great destination... I've petted the whales! Aside from having a good time and enjoying Mexico, the group also does charity work for the local Mexican communities that they visit along the way. That in itself is very rewarding.

If you get to Guaymas, there is an RV park in front of the Hotel Cortez. Last time I was there, it had full hookups (although I won't testify in behalf of the water). The restaurant in the hotel is quite good, and Guaymas is known for shrimp. The hotel was built by the Southern Pacific, and the hotel itself is quite wonderful.

In Baja Norte, San Felipe, on the east coast not many miles south of Mexicali is a popular destination. Last I knew, though, roads really go no further, though Google Maps now shows Highway 5 continuing on.
On the Pacific Coast, Rosarito (north of Ensenada) is a popular place for ex-pats. There is a decent campground just south of Ensenada. Further south, there are a few campgrounds popular for whale watching activities.
On the east coast of Baja Sur is Santa Rosalia, with a fine beach attended by many US and Canadian types (boondocking). Further on is Mulege. I haven't been to Mulege for years, but when I was there the water was good. Even filled the tank in the plaza from a local tap.
Many people seem to like Puerto Peñasco, (on the mainland) but they have obviously found something I never did.
Bu the way, just north of Ensenada, at El Sauzal, you take Highway 3 to (or from) Tecate (easy crossing), which takes one through the wine growing region of Baja Norte, and indeed of all of Baja. Some good wines are to be found, reds predominating.

MH are more costly to insure in general than a vehicle. The fine print in some policies say they insure up to a certain distance from the border, for example 50 miles. For us going to Guayamos was beyond this distance. If we were staying more than a month, the initial cost would be spread out.

Maybe the terms have changed since last year.

I'm on the mainland Mexico currently (Sonora) - Liability insurance on my rig is $275 for the year (same for my tow car), and my USAA insurance covers my comprehensive the same here as in the US, so insurance is really no big deal and I'm fully covered.
