Those, as you must know since your booking early, are peak times in Glacier:)! We were going in peak time too, in a 40' RV.
So we made reservations at the KOA. A very nice, well maintained, and priced accordingly, RV Park for two nights.
We used it as a home base to land a site in Apgar, with the intent of going in and scouting out a site.
This worked well for us. And it reinforced our strategy of getting 'into the park'. Our first day into the West Entrance, was a 40 min wait in traffic to get to thru the gates. This at 7:45AM, when we turned off to the road from the KOA which was maybe 5 mins away.
We located two sites in Apgar, where the sticker's indicated campers were leaving the same day we wished to arrive. We caught one gent in camp, and he as nice enough to let us ask him when he left, to please:
-Set up a folding chair that we brought in our Toad
-And to put out an Envelope with our information that we'd filled out onto the post's clamp.
Even then, I grabbed my cup of coffee, and another folding chair, and drove into Apgar the day they were leaving. Paid my money into the envelope (Old fart's discount!), and then set up a second chair.
The nice couple, invited me over for more 'camp stove coffee' (They were tent camping.), and even to join them for breakfast. I said yes, and thank you, to the coffee... But then headed on out to give them their last AM at Apgar by themselves. They said they'd be on the road by 9:00AM.
So we left KOA at 8:45AM, and were at the site by 9:30AM with our Coach. (The Ranger at the entrance, commented on the short line to get into the park:)!
We really liked being 'in the park of Glacier'. Bear's around us, deer in our site, and all. Solar helped some, but due to tree shading in our (And frankly all Apgar sites.), we did need our generator for a few hours during the day. We could ride our bike's around locally. And, to head further into the park for hikes an drive's, we feel we easily save a good 30-90 minutes by being 'in the park' each day...
So. Yes to KOA as a splurge for a few days. Or, if you don't really care about peak time 30-60 min's wait times to get into the park, it's a super location. (And reminder, expensive too!). If you do what we did, and use it for a few day 'spring board' into Apgar - that for sure is another approach too:)!
No wrong, or right - on this one...
Best to all,
Smitty
