Need help on the road

Yahoo Message Number: 112938
I'm on the road having completed about 4K miles of a 5k mile trip. I plead complete ignorance since I hadn't checked my transmission fluid until now. I noticed the temp was very low, so when I finally checked it, it had just a trace of fluid near the end of the stick instead of being between the hatch marks. My rig is a 32' Allure 2001 model. It has the 330 hp Cummings with the Allison trans. I have a manual on the engine but not the trans. How do I check the fluid as well as add fluid and what kind? Help me ASAP Please!

Do not use the stick
drive at least 25 miles are more then stop in a level spot and idle for 2 to 5 minutes then push down on the up and down arrow at the same time and it will tell you ok or how many Qts low you are and maybe overfull

On my 99 Intrigue with the same engine and transmission they used a hand pump to add fluid through the gauge tube after a bad seal was replaced. Tedious but that's how it's done from what I understand.

Hi John,

To check the fluid level you need to have the motor home on a level surface, fluid warmed to at least 150 degrees and the engine idling. Let the engine idle for a couple of minutes then remove the dip stick, clean it off and re-insert. Then pull it out and check the level.

You add new fluid into the same tube that the dip stick is located.

As far as fluid to use, that is not an easy answer. Most later Allisons came with Allison Transynd but I don't think it was available in 2001. Maybe someone with the same year as yours can help with that. You might check the coolant reservoir for a sticker with the trans fluid info. Mine does have that.

I hope this helps,

How Are you doing a cold or hot fluid check. The user guide says to perform a cold check 60- 120 degrees F
1 park vehicle on level surface and apply brake.
2 Block all wheels
3 run engine at idle 500-800 rpm for at least 1 minute
4 shift to drive then to reverse
5 shift to neutral and allow engine to idle
6 clean all dirt from around the end of the fluid fill tube before removing the dip stick. Remove and wipe clean.
7 insert dipstick into tube and remove. Check the fluid level reading if the guild on dipstick is between cold add and cold full, the level is satisfactory. If the level is not within this range add or drain to get to level within this range.

Hope this helps
