David you are so right. It doesn't take long for soot and smoke to begin etching everything it is on. It needs to be neutralized in the first 48 hrs to stop the damage. That doesn't mean everything has to be cleaned but should be wiped down with a soapy water solution, no need to rinse until it is cleaned. Do not wait for the insurance settlement that you like, if you want to save your coach get to neutralizing the damage immediately, it is you duty as a policy holder to do what you can to minimize damage.

Glenn;

I spent a fair amount of time today with two representatives from Belfor, an international/national restoration company. They are working with several of the owners and expect more. Gary was with us and we all concluded that this is going to be really tough because insurance companies really don't understand motorhomes very well (nor do restoration companies). I'm afraid that the task at hand is going to be pretty significant and the trick will be to get them to do as you suggest and do a basic clean-up as soon as possible...the question is whether the insurance pay for this and bets on the come that the bigger job is within reason. To clean all of the electronics, flat surfaces and everywhere else the soot has gotten could be significant.

It will basically come down to what the insurance company can negotiate with the restoration company. The exterior is less difficult to estimate and, in my case, Jim Cooley (service manager) and Gary Obermire will get that done pretty quickly. I'm back home now (couldn't do much more than cry by staying there) and will light a big fire under the insurance company tomorrow morning to try to get progress on the smoke situation.

To answer another question, I don't think there is a definitive cause of the fire, but all seem to be leaning toward it starting in a particular coach...probably an electrical problem connected with the charging system? But, with insurance companies all over the place, no one is saying too much for obvious reasons...each individual insurance company will try to subrogate an any direction possible.

Thanks for the info on the need for speed with the smoke/soot.

Thanks much for that info, Dave. And our condolences in advance for whatever loss you've suffered.

Much as I hate to say it, you might be better off if your rig has completely burned. Insurance covering a total loss is almost always less painful than dickering over cost of repairs, and repairing a fire/smoke damaged rig of the complexity of ours is a real nightmare. We bought our Allure from Susan a year ago, and are really sorry for their (and all of you owners in storage there) losses. Happy that the sales/repair shops weren't damaged, but we're very saddened that so many of the CC community are so severely impacted.

Look forward to hearing more details when you get up there.

I would contact ServiceMaster of Eugene. Truly fire and water damage professionals. Belfor is more of a commercial water damage restoration. I think that you would get the service you and your coach deserve. I'm very biased since I'm a ServiceMaster Company also. I know what kind of service we offer. Wish I wasn't so far away I would love to handle all those claims.

I was up there for three days last week dealing with my coach. At that point they did not have a definitive cause. It undoubtedly started in a particular coach, but I don't know which one. Probably one of the 7-8 hulks that remain in the remnants of the warehouse. I am sure that all of the insurance companies are awaiting an answer so that they can go after a particular company for liability issues.

A number of the coaches had been cleaned externally and were beginning to be detailed. Some had roof damage from the heat and some did not. All had smoke and soot on the inside and at least two restoration companies were working to clean the interiors. I signed a contract with Belfor, as did a number of others, and at least 4 coaches were in process when I left. I am encouraged that the interior will come out OK, though it is a very labor intensive process. In my coach, most of the exterior work will involve replacing things that were plastic on the roof and a couple of places that need to be sprayed because of discoloration from what drained down over the edges of the roof that they have been unable to buff out. Big charge for replacing the front 3M mask which is also discolored and will undoubtedly need painting when it is removed.

Haven't a guess yet what all of this is going to cost, but so far, my insurance have been co-operating (Allstate). Since insurance companies really don't understand how intricate a motorhome really is, they are relying on experts (Gary and Jim at Premier) and the restoration companies to guide them in the process. Lots of trust required on all sides!

Found other inside storage nearby, so that is also a relief. I expect to go back up in 2-3 weeks and will report on progress, but am happy to answer questions in the interim.
