Great Service for the darned boost pump

This is a story and a "shout-out" for great service.

We were traveling south on the Florida Turnpike and stopped in a service area about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach. I noticed antifreeze leaking near the tag axel and checking, verified that it was the dreaded boost pump. We added 6 gallons of water hoping we could make the next exit, no such luck. We were forced to stop along the Turnpike and add more water, which did get us to the next exit. I don't recommend stopping along the Turnpike, very scary.

At the exit we added more water and I searched the All Truck app for a solution. I found a Kenworth Dealer about 15 miles away and called them about my problem. After some discussion they told me that there was a Cummins shop across the street. With only 15 miles to go, we got onto I-95, sure we would make it. As we neared the exit we notice the engine temp starting to rise. Well, we managed to get off the Interstate on to a local road and the engine quit. We add more water with cars honking because we are blocking one lane. A lot of people have no patience. With less than 2 miles to go, this time we made it. It is now 4:00 pm.

I explained my problem to the service advisor and he said he was covered up and it would likely 2 days before he could look at our coach. After some pleading he said I could come up when they opened in the morning at 7:30 am and he would see what he could do. I showed up at 7:15 and he was able to squeeze me in. One of his guys was familiar with the boost pump problem, having bypassed them before. With everything fixed we were on our way by 10:00 and the bill was very reasonable.

This Cummins shop is in Riviera Beach and the service advisor is Roberto Roca. He sure went the extra mile for us. I can't say enough about this Cummins Shop. If you are in the West Palm area and have a problem, I believe you can rely on them and they are less then 2 miles off of I-95.

I would like to know what pump you replaced yours with. Do you have model and part number for it? Our coach came with out the boost pump and when I am driving when it is cold I don't feel that I get the full amount of heat. If you have that info it would be great. Thanks!

Glad this worked out for you!!

We thought we were losing ours coming back from Alaska on the Cassier Highway. I found a heavy equipment maintenance shop, went in and talked with the Manager/Mechanic/Janitor/Receptionist all in one gent. He had a different hat hanging on the wall for each duty:)! I got about 1 1/2 mins into my description, he held up his hand and said 'It would be faster if I just go and look at it.' So I followed him out as he grabbed his crawler and flashlight, walked out to where we were parked next to a grader, and he crawled under the rear. 30 second later he came crawled back out, and said give me a minute and walked back to his shop. Returned with a screw driver and a rag. Back under, two mins later he came out and said go start your engine and turn on your dash heater. Said he'd be back in 5-10 mins. Went back into his shop and went back to work. 10 mins later he came out, had me turn off the engine, and handed me the flashlight and said to take a look and see if you seen any leakage around the top hose. I did, and everything was dry, on all connections. He said the top hose clamp had loosened, and he'd snugged it up.

When I saw the leak, and looked in thru the back access panel with the flashlight, I saw moisture on the body of the pump, and 'assumed' it was the notorious pump failure. Had topped off the coolant tank with about 3/4 of a gallon of Final Charge 50/50 I carry as a spare.

Where his Manager hat, he said 'Have a good rest of your trip!'. I insisted that I wanted to pay him for not only his time, but also being polite with my lack of crawling under and investigating what the root cause of the leak. He said well he had a minimum shop charge of 30 mins for all work, so how about $40 US? I pleaded with him to accept a $50, claiming it was all that I had... He said OK, but that he'd use the extra $10 to buy a Pizza for his kid on the way home!!!

Flash forward two years, and the pump it self started to leak again. A slight leak, and yes I did examine it an determine it was the pump itself. We drained out about 2 gallons of coolant into a clean pail, bypassed the pump, and unplugged the electric connection. Started the engine, and poured the coolant back into coolant tank. I examine the hose clamps on my and snug them up a bit, on each of my yearly under chassis checks:)!

OP - Smooth sailing with yours, and neat to give the shop the at a boy for getting you in/out the next day!!!
