Residential Refrigerator

I decided to change over to an 11CF residential that will hold about the same as the Dometic which we found an adequate size for us. This one can come in via the front door.

My question is why do you find it necessary to secure the doors while traveling? I realize the Dometic had locks but vary rarely would anything in there shift and I travel some tough roads. Are they prone to flying open in a sharp turn? My refrigerator at home takes a bit of a pull to open the doors.

Different subject but the outlet behind my refrigerator is not wired to the inverter. One Romex from the breaker box. Thought I read that outlet was wired both ways.

I have a residential fridge in mine also.

Often, it will stay closed on it's own.

Problem is, when the day comes that it's doesn't stay closed, the entire fridge can dump on the kitchen floor.

Sooner or later you will make a curve or turn where it will fly open. It's not pretty.

We installed a Samsung refrig 8 yrs ago. We found that a lock is necessary because things do move in there and the doors will come open. If you are going with the Samsung there is a simple lock that can be made out of a piece of plywood that holds both the upper doors and the lower freezer in place while traveling. There should be a file somewhere in the groups archives. It works great and no drilling is needed on your new refrigerator.

I used a short amount of nylon strap and a plastic clip like you see on fanny packs to make a looped belt to hold the doors closed. Works like a charm. Found all the parts laying around the house.

The fridge fixer is a good door lock for the Samsung. The website is

Photo #1 is 'open' for storage and Photo #2 is 'locked' for travel.

Latch my brother-in-law put on his residential fridge in his Foretravel.

To all of you that have the double-handled refers with "open" curved handles, here's what I did on one we had in a Monaco we owned (when the primary factory-installed lock came loose once too often!). I simply purchased a tee shaped plastic squeegee from a bath shop, dropped it, with the "tee" pointing down, into the opening between the handles and door front, and bingo!, a clean and reusable secondary door lock!

Thanks for the posts and I will use something to secure the doors. I was asked a couple of questions.

This is the one I ordered. With doors off it is only 22" so will fit thru the 23"+ front door that we have on our older units. I did not wish to take the window out so had to find one that would satisfy our requirements.

I had CW remove the Dometic since that was not an easy task. They took the refer doors off and removed all the heating/coils stuff off the back. Some other metal parts were removed. At first they did not think it would go thru the front door.

I did have to redo the enclosure after the Dometic was removed.

The conversion in the Foretravel looks like a nice job.

    Hi all,

Just like so many others, we chose to go with the Samsung several years ago, and it also went through our door.
