GPS, Garmin iQue 3600

I'm interested in a iQue 3600 and would be interested if anyone is using one and how it is working for short and cross country traveling.

Has anyone tried or now using one of these GPS and is it workable???? If not what would you recommend. Currently I'm using the lap top and a Delorme.

I have a Garmin Street Pilot 2610 in the coach and a Street Pilot III in the jeep. They are wonderful and I wouldn't think of traveling without them. I plug them into the cigarette lighter and keep them on the dash. For the Street Pilot 2610 on the coach I had an external antenna mounted on the roof.

I also have a Garmin Etrex Legend for hiking.
You'd think I was a GPS junky. Let me know if you want to know more about these things.

I have the Garmin Streetpilot III for about 6 months now. It is very helpful in the coach and I transfer it to the toad when I am driving it. I find that it works great as long as the maps are accurate- sometimes they are not. But that is not a problem 95% of the time.
They are not as good in the middle of nowhere( rural areas) but sometimes like in Myrtle Beach, they are next to useless. I think it is a matter of Navtech not supplying Garmin with accurate maps in some areas, but I am not sure... I think most mapping programs are about 2 years behind and most get their maps from Navtech.

But I am solo and no navigator, so I appreciate the help of the Garmin. I also plan my route and write it in bullet points on a card just to be safe... it is a lot easier to turn the Jeep around than it is to turn the motorhome around...

Another good thing about the Garmin is that you can look up locations for many things, like restaurants, post offices, stores, pharmacies, groceries etc... as well as specific addresses.
I had copilot 2002 and 2003- would not recommend it... it was a pain to use the laptop while driving and it never worked right, conflicts with my soundboard and other problems that they never could correct.
Garmin is far superior... hands down.

I have CoPilot 2004, now called Laptop 7. I agree with David, the user interface sucks and I am a computer expert - been in the field for 35 years. That being said, the system works well and rarely has any mapping errors and those that do exist are very minor. I have never had to make a U turn with CoPilot. I have no operational problems running the system on Windows XP professional. It also came with a complete set of Canada maps, I believe it was a special offer, but for those that frequent our northern neighbor its worth the price of admission.
My co-pilot wife and navigator can't read a map worth a dam, so a GPS system system has gone a long way to eliminate arguments on that issue.

How were you able to get CoPilot to send you a free '04 program? I have sent them corrections to maps and the best they would do is offer to sell me a new program for $99.

I have a Garmin III as well. I have it hooked up to my laptop and it displays the picture/map on my laptop screen so I can see it in the coach. It also displays other data as well. You need a special cord from Garmin but it is simple to use. Recommend it highly

A month ago, I purchased a Magellan Roadmate 700. Really love it.
Voice is better than the Garmin Streetpilot (I beleive that was the model). Whole USA and lower Canada. Even some interior RV Park streets like Desert Shadows and the neighboring Outdoor Resorts in Cathedral City CA. Led me right onto the two-way street for the site within the park (but had me pointing the wrong way to back it - darn!). But it does tell you if you need to be in the left or right lane on the other side of the overpass to get onto the freeway as you are approaching the overpass! Touch screen - just touch in partial street or city name; easier than Garmin or Hertz NeverLost upon which this unit is based. 2 million attractions (which include grocery stores and much much more). Ever search for a grocery store after getting to the RV park. Punch, Attractions, Grocery, Nearest, select the store, and it will lead you there! Quickly recalculates routes on the fly if you decide to detour.

My only objection is that it does not have an attraction category for RV Parks -- something I understand will be rectified with the 10/2004 update. Mine came with a 10gb hard disk built in that is just partly full. One connection -- cig lighter.
My wife even loves the unit. Glad she did. It lists for $1299, but Costco Online sells it for $1099, plus a $50 factory rebate is in effect now. Also at BestBuys and Circuit City (but $1299 less rebate).

I am now a former user of a Garmin attached to a laptop running Delorme Street Atlas. The Roadmate is just so much easier to use in a Toad.

If you have purchased one of these, Magellan is providing a free $50 Window Mount for the unit, because of reported concerns with their vent mount provided with the unit. Just call Customer Service.
