New muffler :-(

The tail pipe (from the end of the muffler) rotted off, so it looks like the muffler needs to be replaced. Does anyone have any advice? Cost estimate? We just arrived in Myrtle Beach, SC, yesterday, and I don't know yet if anyone here can do it. Can the coach be driven far without that pipe routing the exhaust through the fiberglass coach side?

Hi Dick,

A piece of tin wrapped around it and secured with baling wire should keep you going until you can secure a good fix. Might even consider putting the tin on the inside.

I have a '95 Intrigue. I am going to change the muffler and tail pipe. I am going to use a Flowmaster with 5" dia in and out, series 40. For a tailpipe, I am going to use a stainless 18" L tip that I'll cut down to fit. Obviously, it will take some fabrication on my part for a new hanger and exhaust pipe, but I think it will be worth the effort and will look a heck of a lot nicer than that old rusty tip poking out the side of my shiney coach. Might look into that. I got my parts from Summit Racing (online). By the way, the muffler was about $120, the tip about $50 and a mander bent 90 was about $55. Other than a couple muffler clamps and a days worth the fab....that's about it.

We lived in the Myrtle Beach area for about 5 years and there are not many places there that work on MHs. We used Larrys repair service which is off of the 17 bypass near the old air base back gate behind the Waffle House. He does a lot of misc. engine and chassie type work on MHs. There are also a few dealers south around Ocean Lakes that might do that work. Have them check the pipe that comes from the turbo to the muffler also. Ours fell off last week burning a hole in an air line and melting some transmission wires. This pipe is becoming a problem on some coaches.

Our pipe from the turbo to the muffler fell off at 48,000 miles, and I believe it could be a problem on all engines. The pipe does not have any support so it vibrates to a point where the flange brakes away from the rest of the pipe and stays on the turbo.
