Question for those who own/tow a Honda Civic

Hi Ya All,

Can anyone out there tell if a Honda Civic (specifically the Hybrid Civic) can be towed behind a motorhome? Was at a Honda dealer today checking out the Civic Hybrid and the owners manual does not say if the Civic can be towed behind a motorhome. All it mentions is emergency towing instructions. The website mentions that it can be towed if you follow the instructions for towing front wheel drive Hondas (whatever that is).

Hi RIck;

The Honda Civic hybrid can not be towed. I inquired when they were introduced.
The hybrid has a different (CV - continuously variable) automatic transmission.
I thought all those batteries would be useful if they could be tapped for extended stays. Seems the batteries are some sort of a quick discharge/recharge type.

I bought a '03 Honda Civic EX automatic coupe and tow that. Weights 2650# gets an easy 35 mpg and has the usual Honda quality.

Can't say about the Civic, however the 2004 Pilot has explicit instructions for motorhome towing in the owners manual. You might want to contact Honda America for a written policy regarding that specific model Civic.

If it says tow it like any other front wheel Honda...here are the instructions from Honda letter:

Start engine and let warm up for 5 minutes, shift from Park down to lowest forward gear, then shift through all forward gears stopping at Neutral, turn key one click counter clock wise to Auxilary position...this allows your steering wheel to remain unlocked. I've towed a Honda Accord over 35,000 miles this way with no trouble so not sure why you would want to trade DOWN to a Saturn.....

You can NOT tow the Civic Hybrid because it has a continuously variable (CV) transmission.

True, but you can tow an Accord, CRV, Odessy, and or Pilot.
And Honda Element! Also various Acuras, which are really Hondas. One of our two toads is an Acura Integra.

You forgot to mention the Honda Civic. I tow one. But not the Civic Hybrid.

Oh, and don't forget the Honda Element. Some love it, some hate it.
BTW, the Saturn Vue V-6 uses a Honda drivetrain (engine and transmission) thus is towable 4 down.

Thank you all for the responses. One of the reasons I wanted to go with the Civic Hybrid, is to buy a green car. Especially since I from the Southern Calif. area and I do spend a few months of the year there.
So I am going to take the following steps based on you all's recommendation:
I am going to contact Honda direct and get the straight poop (because their website and literature gives conflicting information). Although, I think Tom Nagy is right though because of the transmission.
If it turns out I can't tow the Honda, I will consider the regular Civic (it gets great gas mileage too), the Element (had one before and love'd it), and consider the Saturn (because Tom Royer is my friend).

I don't know how "green" (environmentally speaking, of course) it is, but you can tow a VW diesel New Beetle, Golf or Jetta. My brother commutes (not tows) in one and gets 45-50mpg at highway speed. In addition to the great fuel mileage, he loves the range that the high mileage and comparatively large fuel tank give him.

I drove a new VUE v-6, A VUE REDLINE and a HONDA Pilot all in the same day.
The Pilot is heavier and won't keep up with a VUE, but other wise the PILOT is the clear winner in every way. TWI Saturn L300 owner.

Why not trade up to a GMC Envoy. Takes a few second to shift the 4 wheel drive computer to nuetral, shift the gear lever to park and put the key in your pocket. Steering is not a locking type so you can turn the key off and lock the vehicle, but it must be a 4 wheel drive. Of course the vehicle weight is around 5000 pounds so you must use a hitch that is rated at 10,000 pounds but it is a great tow vehicle. And you don't need any rock guard because it sits high enough off the road to avoid rocks. All towing instructions are in the manual.

The build quality of the GMC is not as good and I don't want to have to carry a ladder to get in an out. Its higher than my Dodge diesel. TWI
