Intrigue Mud Flap

We have had the unfortunate experience of having one of the eye bolts holding the mud flap on our '01 Intrigue break and drop the flap.
This happened last Summer while driving the Interstate through St.
Louis.

I have learned that on this coach there are two 5/16" holes drilled through the frame and 5/16" galvanized steel eye bolts are inserted to clip onto the mud flap. The bolts, whether galvanized or stronger stainless steel, are not big enough to support the weight of the flap. They will bend down with the weight and eventually break.

I replaced the bolts twice after the original dropping of the flap when they bent to a dangerous breaking point. Country Coach did replace our damaged mud flap last Summer at no cost ("Customer Goodwill") Of course, I keep checking the bolts as we travel Yesterday, I again had to replace the bolts while traveling in the Lake Tahoe area of California. The only real fix is to drill larger diameter holes in the frame so that larger diameter and stronger bolts may be used. Country Coach has agreed to do this when we are in Junction City in June.

So....this is just a cautionary note to check the bolts holding the mud flap if you have an '01 Intrigue. It probably wouldn't hurt to check them on other coaches as well.

Interesting you bring this up, but I just had a problem with my mud flap on my Allure. Somehow the mud flap pulled through the bolt as I was driving down a Calif. freeway. I had to pull over and "jury rig" it until I got to the Pacific Cummins in Irvine, CA. Not only did it happen once, but it has happened twice now. This time, Pacific Cummins replaced both bolts and put on thicker and better washers. Have not any more problems in the last couple of weeks with the mud flap. Don't know if this is a CC design flaw or what. I didn't contact CC about it; I just took care of it.

My Mud Flap Attachment/Installation is very weak looking and I have my Fingers & Eyes Crossed that I can find time to get it strengthened before the BIG crash on the Highway. Being the 2nd owner of our Rig, I guess it is up to me to make it safe. The Mud Flap installation must be the alst minute after tought as the Rig leaves the assembly line....

If you had a bolt problem .... bending and/or breaking to drop the flap.... be sure the DIAMETER of the bolts is wide enough to hold the weight of the flap. That was our problem. If your bolt just came out of the frame hole, then better washers and lock nuts would be the fix. Isn't it a great experience to lie on your back trying to fix the flap with your head next to the traffic on the freeway ???

I suggest that you do find the time to at least replace the current bent bolts with new ones before you have to lay on your back to do this next to the highway.
Whether you are the first or second owner, this seems to be a CC problem in the 2001 coaches. They did a great job of replacing our flap at no cost and have now agreed to drill larger holes in the frame to hold wider diameter bolts.
