PAC Brake

Yahoo Message Number: 20001
Hi...I just joined this group as I am now the proud owner of a 1994 CC Magna Caprice. My experience in driving a motor home totals maybe 1/2 hour. So now I am going to be headed to Phoenix, AZ and drive the motor home back to Kansas, some 1400 miles, mostly on freeway.
I spent a lot of time checking out the motor home before I bought it but now realize that I didn't make sure the PAC brake was working. I do remember seeing a thing that looks like a metal box on the floor, about 3x3 inches and it says PAC on it. My question is how does it operate and how will I know if the PAC brake is working? I will be going up Hwy 17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff and I think it would be well to know if it is working before I tackle those hills.

This looks like a great group. Thanks very much for your help.

Doug;

A couple of things. First on the drivers left is console. There should be a toggle switch for the pac brake, should be flipped forward and green light.
Second in the electrical compartment, lots of fuses. Should find which one the pac is on. Outside, under drivers seat, small door.
Pac brake is on the exhaust pipe, should be near the manifold/ turbo. Actually built into the exhaust pipe with a lever on the side and the air piston to push it closed.
You should notice the coach deaccellerating without touching the brake.
Might try driving at 35 - 40 mph, take foot off accelerator, this will actuate the air valve below the petal. Pac should engage as transmission downshifts.
Other option is to take the large panel under the bed off, have someone else driving and do this, you should see the air piston push the level up. Diffinitely hear the change in the exhaust noise.
I had a problem once where the brass fitting connecting the air line to the air piston came loose.

Hope this helps
Steve
