Wheel Noise

Yesterday as I began to drive, we heard a scraping/rattleing sound coming from the front drivers side wheel. It sounded a little like having a couple of small rocks in the hub cab plus a scraping sound like a piece of tin scraping on the iron of the rim. I removed the hub cap and checked the oil level in the hub it was OK and there was no small rocks in the hub. I inspected the rims and wheels on both sides and could see nothing. I had my wife operate the brakes while I observed them from underneath the coach. The mechanism worked freely during application and release. I called CC tech support and they said it would be a good idea to have someone look at it. We drove about 50 miles to the nearest tire shop in Haver MT. During that drive, the sound continued for a while (speed about 55 mph).
Then, we hear sort of a clunk and it stops. I theorized that it might be the smartire device mounted on the inside of the rim. At the tire shop, we raise the wheel and spin it, no noise. We remove the wheel, and break the seal on the tire and check the smartire divice, it is securely fastened to the rim. I now think it might have something to do with the brakes. Maybe a small rock or some piece of metal or something was in the brake drum area making the noise. Upon application to the brakes there is no pulling to the right or any indication of uneven front brake operation. I've driven another 150 miles and everthing seems normal. Has anyone else had this type of problem and what was the outcome of it? TP 2004 Allure #31028

This may be a good time to warn others. I had two similar tire blowouts that, upon closer inspection of the second, were initiated by pieces of the hose clamp that attaches the Smartire to the rim breaking off and eventually digging into the tire. They are supposed to trim off exess from the clamp but the speed demons at Schwab Tire in Junction City did not do this.

Try removing the hub cap and then drive it for a while to see if it continues to make noise. I had a hub cap that was moving around and would make a clunking noise with each tire revolution. I replaced the hub cap and the noise stopped. They're pretty cheap, about $8 at any truckstop.

I had a very similar experience with a 2000 Intrigue I owned, and it turned out to be the wheel bearing ( same wheel as yours). I assume when you removed the wheel you checked the bearing?

I just had new TOYO tires installed and when I started down the street after the install, I heard a click, tick, or something odd, something that was not there prior to the new tire install. I took the coach back to LS and they jacked and spun the front wheels. As soon as the installer heard the noise he knew what it was.
The balance weights are on strips stuck to the inside of the wheel, they had been mounted wrong and where hitting the brake assy. one had wadded itself into a ball and was in position to cause real braking problems if not found.
