I think we are getting "wrapped around the axle" on this subject.

The key word is COMMERCIAL!!!.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES transport for hire.

COMMERCIAL DRIVERS drive for hire.

If we do none of this we are not COMMERCIAL and COMMERCIAL REGULATIONS do not apply to us.

Commercial has nothing to do with this issue, Skip. There is no mention of commercial in the federal statutes--read them yourself. Unless someone can come up with an excemption, the 20k pound axle limitation is both federal law, and the law in most states, except the ones I mentioned in the earlier post. How much we need to worry about it, is another matter, and for each individual to make up his/her mind on.

Per, what you say is true, but these regs. are enforced by the DOT & the FMCSA. These enforcement folk deal with commercial operations and unless we use our coaches in a commercial way they will not have any occasion to scrutinize RVs. Even without a formal exemption, isn't the total lack of enforcement enough.

Having spent many years working in all areas of commercial motor transportation, my humble opinion is that we should be concerned with any infringements that would be cause for liability if we should be involved in a traffic accident. I would be happy to expound on this subject if anyone is interested.

I have been waiting for someone else to bring this to this message board's attention: THE KEY WORD HERE IS commercial!____ If you are driving for someone else and they are NOT paying you, you are considered a PRIVATE citizen and respective laws apply.
There are also laws between the States(Intra-State Compact) where the individual from which ever his "home" state is, even though in another state(driving through) will not be chargedwith any wrongdoing in regards his Motorhomeven though it may not live up to the standardsof the State you are in. Also regards DRIVERS LICENSES!!!
