Splendide - dryer exhaust filter or not?

Yahoo Message Number: 10528
Does your Splendide have a removable filter on the back of the unit for the dryer exhaust?

Ours did originally (from the Country Coach factory), but we found out from another Splendide user that there are 2 different adaptors shipped from Splendide with every washer - one with a "removable filter that must be cleaned after every load" and one with a "direct exhaust to the outside without a filter".

We switched to the direct exhaust model and our clothes dry 20% faster and use 20% less electric. The air volume out the side of the coach is substantially greater. Switching is easy as only 2 screws hold the adaptor to the back of the washer. For some reason, CC chooses to install the adaptor with the filter that requires cleaning. The back pressure around the filter also causes volumes of lint to accumulate in the area around the back of the washer. I removed our washer and cleaned out the entire cabinet when I installed the filterless adaptor and we haven't had a spec of lint or dust in the cabinet since. The small amount of lint that normally would gather on the filter just blows outside when using the direct exhaust adaptor without the filter. We like it much better.

Bob, did your Splendide have the direct exhaust adaptor with it ? Ours didn't, and I wonder if you were able to get it from CC or went direct to Splendide?

Good idea to change adapters and remove the filter. My lint filter never collects lint like my home dryer. Pretty course screen. Not really keen on pulling out washer/dryer. Wonder if I could use the sticky foil tape to cover the opening created when I pull out the filter.

Walt; No, our Splendide did not have the second adaptor in it. I got it from Lazydays. You could also get it at Camping World. I guess Country Coach throws the direct exhaust adaptor away. Both Lazydays and Camping World confirmed that the Splendide comes with both adaptors and the manufacturer decides which one to install on the washer before putting it in the coach.

In answer to Herb and Mellita's question...

Yes, you could just pull out the filter and tape the hole shut to get a similar result. The only reason I pulled out the washer is to clean out the pound of lint that accumulated around the washer because of the blow-back from the lint filter. I also cleaned out the exhaust hose since it had a good bit of accumulation too. It is not necessary to remove the washer to switch adaptors. Just remove 2 screws and install the new adaptor. I was told that the direct exhaust adaptor has a bigger throat and therefore provides greater airflow than the filtered adaptor, so changing adaptors might have a small advantage over just taping the hole shut. Besides, the heat from the dryer might melt the tape covering the hole and then you'd be blowing lint all inside your coach! It is an easy job, so I'd suggest just switching adaptors.

OK, for all the dummies out here, I'll ask the question...How did you pull out your dryer! Ours is in the lower half of a storage cabinet with VERY limited access, as I'm sure most have.

Also, what is involved in changing to the direct vent? It sounds like there's "something" that we have to install.

Yes, I don't like all the lint that piles up...periodically, I end up hanging into the closet with my vacuum hose and fishing around with it blindly just hoping to pick up whatever lint there is. Also the swiffer duster is good to reach down with. I'd love to do without any of that, though...not to mention having things dry faster!

Dear Jan; Removing the dryer is easy. We also have our dryer in a very tight fitting bottom cabinet. When you open the doors to the washer/dryer, you'll see a small board at the bottom of the cabinet held in place with a few screws. Just remove the screws holding the board and the few screws holding the front of the plastic drip pan.
Removing the board and drip pan will create an opening just large enough to slide out the washer. Now reach into the hole at the back of the washer and disconnect the vent hose and water line connections and unplug the washer. It will now slide out easily.

Cleaning out all the lint and dust is now an easy task with the washer removed. Be sure to vacuum out the vent hose too.

Hope that helps you.

I think you are using the word easy too easily! First, be very careful
when removing the screws and then removing the wood pieces which are also glued down. Second, the washer/dryer is quite heavy and the lip it sits on is about 9 inches above the tile floor in my Allure. I would put a block of wood on the floor at the level of the front lip so that you could slide the washer onto that rather than let it drop to the floor. My 2cents worth.
We had CW install a Splendide in our '98 Intrigue last year, soon after we bought the coach. The installer folded the W/D's cardboard box and used that to protect the floor and used it as a runner to slide the unit in. He also temporarily removed the cabinet doors rather than take a chance on damaging them.

FWIW, we love our Splendide. It only washes small loads, but that's OK with us.
