Jake brake quit working

New Magna with C15 Cat. Just quit working. Tech at Carrier & Sons couldn't find problem. Anybody had one quit working?

Glen,

Mine (on a Magna 2000) quit working once.
It was a bad voltage regulator that caused it to quit. The Jake brake controller has some protective feature that when the voltage goes to high (somewhere around 15.5V) it shuts off. In my case it was intermitted, as the voltage would sometimes be below the controller's upper threshold).

Thanks, Jed. Yeah, I knew that already, but appreciate your response.

I'm frustrated at the moment because Country Coach is being far less than accommodating to me right now. I made them aware of my Jake Brake problem, but they said it would be late Sept. before they could get me into their shop in Junction City to look at it. That's just plain unacceptable customer service when you consider the price of a new Magna under warranty. I've got my salesman in Junction City trying to do what he can to get me in sooner.

I did my research extensively in deciding on what I thought was the quality factor in CC. I forgot to first check out factory service before buying. Don't think I'd recommend or buy another CC at this point. Pure lousy customer service after the sale.

Do you know anyone who wants an '04 Magna Chalet with only 900 mi. on it???

Are you saying that CC should give precedence to higher priced coaches, instead of first-scheduled, first-served??

Maybe it is a sign of the times....I hope not. But I met a guy a couple of weeks ago with an $350,000 3-slide 43-foot '04 Monaco Executive. Nice looking rig, but he was so disappointed with Monaco Customer Service that he was about ready to hang lemons on the awning and mount a sign that says "Ask me about my Monaco".

Just keep hammering 'em. They'll eventually do it just to make you go away.

The next few weeks are CCIs busiest time of the year with the FMCA convention and the Class reunion. We are on the road to pick up a new Mag on July 26th and CCI has guaranteed that they will fix any problems at the rallies not the factory. But I also made a factory appointment 3 months ago to do warranty work if some arrises. Show up at the Class Reunion and you will get service before Sept. You might also try your dealer, he should do it right away.

Thanks for the reply, Bill - I appreciate the input. Unfortunately, we are still working for the co. that bought ours -- until Sept. 1, so we can't make it to the rallies. Guaranty says they don't have techs that can handle Jake Brake problems. I've "cooled down" some now, but still think it's a bad situation. I just don't see how I could take this thing out too far, as complicated as it is, and all that could go wrong.. . of course, looks now like I can't even take it out locally very far, what with their service customer care.

I understand your frustration, I switched from Foretravel for the same reason. Mine is out of warranty, but CC has been great to deal with and very helpful, although you should get immediate assistance in my opinion. Have you contacted Cummins? Hang in there...

Yeah, I even talked with CAT and they say it is unlikely that the problem is on their end. They suggest having CC check out their stuff first. Thankfully, the Customer Service Manager from CC called me this morning and is trying to work me in to check this thing out.
Hasn't called me back with a time and date, but I'm now hopeful. He seemed genuinely interested in helping me, so I feel better about them already. We'll see.

OK, I'm willing to eat some crow here, guys. Jim from CC called me back and can get me in next Wed. to check out the Jake Brake problem. The guy couldn't have been nicer nor more accommodating.
He convinced me that they really do care. Good enough for me. I'm sorry for the fuss, but they really had me riled up yesterday for awhile.

No crow necessary, Greg. I'll try to make this story short...when I bought my Inspire, everyone I talked to...the salesman at Guaranty, the sales rep from Country Coach, the finance guy..everyone knew I wanted to have Shawn Davis put a desk in the living room slideout next to the dining table. When I got to the service center after having traveled several thousand miles in the coach, I was told that it was impossible to put a desk in the slideout because that would put too much weight in it. I was furious...went to Guaranty looking for another rig - maybe not a CC - went balistic! After emails from me and phone calls from the service techs, I finally got a response that the slideout could hold 1,000 pounds. Plenty of space for a desk and the attendant stuff...computers, printers, etc. Found out that they really do care, but you sometimes have to go balistic on them to make them realize it. 8-)

I'm going to guess the Jim who called you was Jim Cooley, the guy who has always been first class with me. I once told Bob Lee the best salesman he had was not in the marketing group, but was Jim Cooley in customer service. In the nineties he was the one and only tech rep you got if you called CC. He had a way of diagnosing problems and getting me to a service facility no matter where I was in the U S.
I also have had an excellent relationship with Doug Rutherford who heads up all service and maintenance. When I have a real problem I can't seem to get resolved I call him. so far he has come through for me.

And if you do my question is this: Do you ever experience a jerky sensation in the steering wheel at idle and when moving at low RPMs similiar to when the power steering pump is going out in an automobile? I do and it is frustrating as all get out. Your comments would be appreciatied.

Steve and Linda--sorry, I forgot to answer---Yes I have the 370ISL and love it. I previously had a 325 Cummins in a 97 Intrigue and a 350ISC in a 2000 Intrigue. This 370 is vastly superior in performance to either the 325 or 350.

Walt-thanks so much for the reply. I take the coach into CC Junction City next Monday, 7/19. What concerns me is that CC seems to feel this is within normal tolerance given disign and construction. I've spoken with Guaranty Service and Coach Care and neither has any experience with this type of problem even with CC. No one on the message board has said they share this Power Steering trait. In my opinion it is a serious defect and if need be I will pursue arbitration. Hopefully we will abe able to reslove this in a in a professional manor next week when they have the coach. The last time they atempted to fix the problem they simply increased the rpms to 700 from 600 and it did help but not solve the problem completely.
Coach Care's concern about this approach is that at a stop light I better not let my foot slip off the brake because it will get up and go.

That seems strange that your dealer can't handle a Jake Brake problem. Us guys from the east coast never get factory service so we always reley on the dealer. I would park it in the middle of Gurrantees driveway and tell them to fix it or return your money. Dealers don't always fix it right but they usually try or they tell you where to go. That Jake problem may be something a truck shop could do. Check with CCI for another service dealer and they will pay you by check. Send an E mail to doug Ruth, erford and ask him how to handle.

Like most dealers (& the CC factory) we do not have the software to diagnose the various engines. Like you mentioned below, I informed Glen where to go, Caterpillar, which is much closer to his house and would be faster than leaving it Guaranty's (SP) driveway. Had Glen choose to park it in our driveway, I would have taken it to a Cat service center for him.

The west coast owners have the benefit of taking it to the factory for service, which is what Glen did. They reffered him to Carrier & Son who is a great local service center. Since Carrier could not repair it chances are it needs to go to a Cat service center. Maybe you did not read the entire post?

On a side note, have you seen the new 42' Magna Van Gogh floor plan?
