Perhaps this is an old idea.... but for those who have not seen it:

Store a "shop rag" in the power cord windup well. This rag can be used when retracting the cord to keep sand and grit out of the wind- up mechanism. Rag can neatly fit around receptacle without interferring with access door closure.
