closet door latches

Yahoo Message Number: 10718
Has anyone with the mirror bypass closet doors found a good way to secure them for travel?

Mine have the small ball shaped prong that fits into a round socket.
The ball or the socket is either worn or the ball, which has a flexable shape, is not providing enough friction.
I currently use a suction cup at the point of bypass to keep the doors from banging as we go down the road, this is poor at best. I really don't want to use a short section of dowel but that is the best fix I can come up with. I need something soon as I am afraid they are going to break.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Larry

I had an old piece of plastic molding that I cut to size, inserted a small black screw in the center of it to use as a handle, and simply drop the molding into the outer door track to prevent the door from sliding.
When it's necessary to slide the door open, we store the molding on top of the nearby window valance where it's out of sight 'til needed again.
For some reason, only the outer/overlapping door (the one towards the middle of the coach) was a problem, so the one piece of molding works for us. But, if necessary, a separate piece for the other door could be used.

Dick, Thanks for the quick reply, I'll give your fix some thought. I'm not sure if it is one or both doors sliding open but that is easy to check.

Larry -

What I did was use little strips of that good old Velcro. Does help.
Be careful - It can snag some garment sleeves if it comes too close to them.

Larry, I use wood dowels in the bedroom window for security when we are camped and I wish to leave the windows opened. While driving I just drop the dowels into the closet rails to prevent them from opening. Hope that can help you. Mike 00 Allure 98 CRV

I used to place dowl rods in the tracks to hold the doors in place. TWI 98 Allure, 2004 Intrigue 11731

Hello Larry,

Gee, am I glad to hear that you are having the same problem as I am having with my Allure. I would have thought that CC would have put better products into their coaches that cost 2.5 times as mine but I guess not. Do the dowel stick thing on the closet and for security for open windows. It is great for the cost pf a couple of dowel sticks.

Kathy, thanks for the reply. I thought of 'Velcro' but decided against it. Not sure why? This does seem to be a problem area.
Thanks again, Larry

Mike, the dowel trick seems to be the easy answer, I have those for standby use, and will see how well the suction cup deal work on some curves and bumps.

Egon, yep! There are a lot of 'Bonehead' stuff on all of these coaches, go figure.

Thanks for the tip.

TWI, dowels are the deal. So I have them ready to use but going to give the suction cup a good test before I admit defeat. Thanks, Larry '99 Affinity

Don't use dowel sticks on the new Inrtigue, just on the old Allure before I traded it in. TWI Intrigue 11731

We learned the trick back in 84 when we had the same problem with our Airstream Limited travel trailer. TWI 11731 Intrigue. Also saw the closet fasteners on hi-fi speaker grills.

That is where I've seen those ball shaped thing-a-rigs. They are for speaker grills not closet doors.

If you are handy with wood work I will send you pictures of the devise I made to sit in the floor track. It looks nice and works well. You will need to use a table saw or radial arm saw.

Jim, I do woodworking and would love to see the device you made, plz send me the pix.
I have given the suction cup thing a mild workout and it seem to hold up nicely but I want something a bit more substantial.
Thanks, Larry
