TV upgrades revisited

I've seen the TV upgrade photos in the photo file, but am interested in getting info from anyone who owns an "older" CC..i.e. with our vintage 2001 Intrigue type of front overhead TV...who has replaced it with some kind of flat screen TV. Where have you had it done? Anyplace in JC? Cost? Etc...

Thanks...we're "considering" doing it in the near future.

I was the one who posted the photos. My coach is a 2002 Intrigue, and I'm pretty sure it had the same style front TV as yours (you bump your head on it, right?)

The work was done on the East coast at Bill Plemmons RV in Winston- Salem, NC. The guy who did the work was a cabinet maker and not a RV technician. I think you could take it to any good cabinet maker and show him the pictures to get what you are looking for in flat panel TV's. I believe I heard several people mention Davis Cabinets in Oregon as a custom cabinet maker that does good work.

The wife decided she wanted a flat screen up front so we went to Davis Cabinets in JC. He said the whole front end would need to be redone to the tune of $9,000. We now think the old head knocker looks pretty good up there.

That sounds a bit high. I had the work done for a little more than $5,000. I would shop around. They did not redo the whole front end, but replaced the original tv cabinet out to the door area.

Jan: I had posted the photos of the LCD replacement under "Larry's" photos in my 1999. A couple of years ago.
At the present time, I am removing that 27" and going to a new Sharp LC37G4U 37" LCD. At the time I replaced my factory "headknocker" the 27 was the largest one available. The new 37 is also HDTV ready.
Hint: When replacing the headknocker, look at LCD. They are much lighter and easier to install than Plasma. Now that the size is getting larger, it really makes it worthwhile. The problem with my 27" LCD is the loss of a full screen when not receiving HD signals or DVD.
If you are going to make a change, it isn't much more difficult to modify the cabinets than the smaller set. I will lose one of the small overhead cabinets with the shallow (worthless) slanted compartment. It won't be missed.

Just purchased a Bose 321 system to upgrade sound system in our 01 Intrigue. We decided on the Bose after looking at several models and the space available. Mounting the Base Speaker under the dash and running a cable up to the control unit will be my biggest channenge. AC power to the Base Cabinet will also require some work. We love the sound and the DVD built in since our coach came with a VHS tape machine.

I will post more details after the install.

I've been looking at doing this on my '98 Allure and it doesn't look all that tough to me. If you remove the TV cabinet, the white vinyl upholstery appears to run all the way across the bottom to the component cabinet above the driver, so you don't have to change that. It looks to me the only real modifications needed are to redo the center cabinet door by cutting it down and turning it into a non- openable "blank" and to make up a matching oak panel for the bare plywood on the right-hand side of the component cabinet.
I second the LCD recommendation--not only much lighter but also much lower power consumption, a real plus when you're dry camping and want to run your TV off the inverter. I also agree you should go widescreen, particularly if you're going to watch a lot of DVD movies on the road as we do.

Best of all, this is a lot cheaper than buying a new CC! :>)

We're looking at doing the same thing so we'll be very interested in how this works out. I am planning on removing the vertical passenger side dash cover and replacing it with a speaker grill, and putting the base unit behind it. There's tons of room in there.

You're right, the biggest headache is running wires from the top down to the dash area. I haven't been able to figure that one out yet, but have only looked at the driver's side. It may be easier on the passenger side.

Thanks for your reply. You are right, there is a ton of room behing the dash on the passenger side but, I only plan to remove area in front of the port on the Sub Woofer. Again, Bose is the only system that will fit ther area and powerfull enought to do the job. We connected it to our TV at home to enjoy the sound. It does a great job and now we are wondering if we can go back to regular TV sound when I move the Bose to the Coach.

There is room on the right side of the wendshild but getting the plug into the cabinet about may require enlarging or drill a hole.
I used a Dremil motor tool to get the plug into the TV cabinet and it worked fine.

Put a piece of trim down the center of the windshield like the Magna had until 2005. You could run the wires through it.

I have also been considering the LCD in my 2000 Allure. But, when reading the specifications on the LCD screen, the temperature rating is 104-114F. Those who have installed the LCD, what is the performance in hot climates? Especially, when the coach is closed up in storage for weeks during summer months?

I've used my LCD for a couple of years now. Hot climates included. No problemo. If you go to a TV store and feel the difference between the LCD and Plasma, you will see the LCD is much cooler. Also much lighter when it comes to suspending it from the overhead cabinet.
