Black water "rinse-out" feature

Yahoo Message Number: 11512
My '04 Magna has a feature for washing out the black and grey water tanks by hooking up a hose to either specific outlet in the outside water bay (I think most CC's have this feature?). Anyway, there is a sticker on each inlet that says to open the discharge valves to the tanks while putting water in. Is this just to insure that one doesn't forget it and walk off, thereby flooding something inside? Seems to me that you'd get a better "rinse-out" by closing the valve and partially, at least, filling the black water tank, then discharging. What's the scoop here. I'm just starting to use this new coach, so questions are popping up.

The rinse out warns you to open the discharge valves to release CC from liability if you should forget to open them and the water floods the coach. In fact, you are right, it is best to close the valves and let the water fill the tank partially. You will be amazed what is still stuck in that tank. I frequently fill the tank partially (ie: 3/4 or 2/3rds) two or three times. Then drain the whole tank.

Remember to only dump the black tank when it is at least 3/4 full.
If you must dump less than 3/4 full, then fill the tank with water first.

Why do you recommend only dumping when the black tank is at least 3/4 full?

The reason that the experts recommend that you only dump the black tank when it is 3/4 full is to allow the chemicals time to break down the waste. A common mistake of "rookies" is to empty the black tank everytime they leave a campground, regardless of how full the black tank is. This causes a buildup of waste that may not have been disolved by the chemicals. In fact, traveling with a 1/4 or 1/2 full tank allows the tank to agitate due to vehicle movement.
At the very least, dump the tank after you have traveled to the new campground. Having allowed the tank to swish back and forth during movement of travel.
