stairwell cover

Yahoo Message Number: 12005
I have a 99 Intrigue and from day one the front door stairwell cover has had intermittent failure problems.
CC has worked on it many times, but has never found a problem. It would also retract, but would not always extend. In the past I could pull on the cover and it would extend, but last week it failed completely and will not extend, but will still retract when pulled out manually. I have checked the switch and it seems ok. Any thoughts?

Thanks Gene

Glen: Welcome to the club. I have a stair cover, but after years of battling the da** thing, I decided my coach didn't come with one. Now I am happy.

Trouble isn't in the basic design, it's the electronics.
Basically, the thing has a small 12v motor that is wound to go forward when current is fed into line "a" and reverse when current is fed into line "b". Simple enough! Add a stop switch at each end of the throw so you can't go too far, and it works. Not!

Simply use a double-throw double-pole switch and it works....not!
I had mine fixed under warranty. It stopped working shortly after the warranty expired. I called the mfg. in Junction City and they said: "Oh, we had some bad motors sent to us, but we didn't know which ones, sorry." They sent me a new motor at the cost of $250. How nice!.
It quit again, so I rewired the damn thing, taking the end stops off. It still doesn't work.
Here's how I deal with it: I don't have a step cover. Who needs one?. I'm a lot happier.
By the way, my coach number is just a few away from mine. You probably have one of the bad motors, why knows. A new motor didn't fix mine. It only worked for a few weeks.
My philosophy is that life is to short to have a miserable step cover be my nemesis. I battled the thing for over four years before giving up.

Thanks for the encouraging news! I did not know that these things are so problem prone. I may have to pull the motor to see if it is bad.

Gene,

My step cover was doing the same thing, except it just suddenly quit working. It could be manually pulled out, if you were outside and pulled REAL hard, but went in with no problems. After time on the phone with CC it was determined that it was not the switch. So, while at the Class Reunion, I had them look at it. The "step actuator" had gone out. The tech indicated that this was not uncommon. In fact, he suggested that I just remove it and operate the cover by hand when I wanted it out. I had him replace the actuator---$548 for the part and at the rally no charge for labor.

Awe warm winters with no bugs. I remember reading about El Dorador Ranch in the early 90's. They were giving some lots away at that time to get people to move. I bet they aren't doing that anymore. I enjoy Baja and hope to do a little exploring around San Felipe. Tell me, do you drive your motor home around the roads much when your down there? Is it much of a problem? Ree wrote:

Have you found a fix? One message talked about a bunch of defective motors and my hunch is that it is the motor, but $250.00 for a 12v motor seems a bit much.

There has to be a cheaper fix, and I will let you know if and when I find it.
