Miles Per Gal data and Miles Per Engine Hour data

Hi Folks,

On a recent trip of 5047 miles our 2000 32 foot Allure (ISC 320 350hp) got 9.01 mpg pulling a 2000 Saturn LS. We drove a strict 55 mph in cruise control. Our Trip started in Central Coast California and reached to eastern Missouri and Iowa.
I looked at something else.

When dividing total distance by engine hours, the result was 42.69 mpeh.

I use to drive faster - 60, 65, 70 mph; I took a look at past data and results were varied: 32.8 for a trip of 2454 miles to Glacier Park, 38.5 for a 420 mile trip to San Diego, 61.6 for a 529 mile trip to Las Vegas, another LV trip resulted in 44.86, a Wyoming trip of 3420 miles gave 39.95 and a New Orleans tip of 4734 miles gave a 45.47 mpeh. So what do I make of this. Is this data useful? Maybe, but I can't quite figure out the trend or what the optimum is. Probably need more data.

You need a few more data points providing miles per gallon vs speed in order to develop some sort of trendline. A linear trend line will give you a general indication, but will not be precise. Idling while parked you get "zero" miles per gallon. Crawling along at 10 to 20 mpg you will get low miles per gallon. As the speed increased the mpg will improve gradually up to a "optimum speed point", then it (mpg) will drop rapidly as speed increases beyond the optimum. A significant factor is the wind resistance against the front of the coach, and the "drag" created as a negative pressure zone behind the coach. Your best bet is to do a number of runs at various speeds and check mpg for each. then you can create your own reference chart.

Has anyone ever checked with CC to see if they have such a chart?

Hi Dick,

When I assemble the remaining data - it may help in determining the optimum speed for maximize mpg. Also on the trip, data was gathered to provide an accurate gas tank digital readout using the existing gas tank sensor.

It sounds like you made a decision to drive 55 for a personal reason. I like to drive between 58 and 63 MPH towing a VW cont. My milage with the ISL 370 seems to range between 8.2 and 9.2 MPG.

Average speed is not important to us. As a matter of fact, I feel safer if I don't try to keep a high average. My wife likes it too.

I also like to run our Magna at 62 mph, carrying my Harley on the lift and towing our CR-V. The C-13 has 4200 miles on it. The Silverleaf shows 7.3 mpg since start-up, and recent trips are achieving over 7.5 mpg, so I expect it to be similar to our C-12 Magna as it breaks in.

Isn't that a uncalbrated number? Does the Silverleaf have a feature to adjust the mpg up or down based on actual data taken by the owner? Fred Kovol

The numbers I posted are from the SilverLeaf read-out of the Caterpillar ECM (engine control module). They are recorded in the ECM and can be also viewed by connceting a PC or hand-held to the SAE data ports.

You are correct that the Silverleaf fuel consumption may be calibrated. Since I don't have enough mileage on this coach, I am unwilling to calibrate just yet. I know from experience todate that the Silverleaf is pretty close on gallons consummed when I fill up.
My past experience on the Magna 42' with the C-12 is that calibration is just 1 or 2 hundredths.
We are departing Texas for the west coast Monday - this will give me more mileage to further refine the data. I am surprised how good the C-13 mileage is. By-the-way, we put 22K miles on our '00 Magna 40'with a C-10 and average almost 10 mpg. We put 46K miles on our '02 Magna 42' with the C-12 and netted 7.4 mpg, allowing for genset and furnace consumption.
