Road OK?

I'm looking for confirmation that Hwy 101 from the Oregon/CA border to San Francisco is okay for 40 ft. coaches with tow vehicles. Thanks.

Hwy 101 from OR to SFO is mostly four lane highway. There is a stretch where it goes down to 2 lanes and winds along the coast and through the redwoods - but no problem for motor homes or big trucks. I drive it quite frequently and see large MH's with toads on there all the time.
Caution: When heading south Hwy 1 splits off from 101 somewhere south of Garberville. Don't make the mistake of getting on Hwy 1 - it can be treacherous for big rigs. Stay on 101.

This is another confirmation the road is just fine. I live in Bandon, which is on 101 in Oregon, about 90 miles north of the California border, and make that drive often, including when we had a 40-foot coach and toad. As others have noted, it's 4-lane most of the way, a few 2-lane stretches and some winding through the redwoods, but no problem. And, to again second the view of others, do avoid Highway 1. It's dramatic, it should be seen, but not from a coach -- just too narrow and winding and dangerous. But 101 is fine. FWIW, 101 north through Oregon is good road, too, and the views are incredible, particularly in the southern part of the state.

We've done the 101 from Geyserville, CA (just north of Santa Rosa) to Florence, OR and it's a great drive...beautiful...we took almost 5 weeks to do it and enjoy it!) It's a good road with lots of turnouts for scenic views (on the ocean side.) I've been on Rt. 1 from San Francisco to Ft. Bragg and it's not as good a road in many places and takes a lot of time. Personally, if you take the leg of 101 from Leggett to the CA/OR border it's a very good road and you see similar sights. If you plan to take 1 south from Leggett to SF add a lot of extra time and patience...

Make sure to take the "Avenue of the Giants" (in the toad, not RV) in Garberville...just a gorgeous drive through the giant redwoods.

BTW...we stayed in Willits at the Willits KOA which was very nice...took the toad over to the coast to see Mendocino/Ft. Bragg, etc. That makes a nice day trip and gives you the opportunity to see that area of ROute 1 without having to drive it. The KOA has a lovely walking trail on their property which was nice to get the "kinks out" after driving.

Made the trip last summer for annual reunion in my 42' Intrigue. With IFS the drive was only marginally more difficult than the previous year with the 36' Intrigue with solid axle. 30mph avg is about all you can expect above Eureka. TWI 11731

Several of us did it this summer on the way to Eugene. I would recommend that you do San Francisco early in the morning. We left Candlestick park and went through downtown about 9 am on Sunday. It was okay--not "fun" but okay.

A beautiful drive all the way to Eugene.
