Anode Rod - Atwood 10 gal water heater

I have such a rod that is firmly 'planted' in my water heater. I tried everything, and was fearful of drilling it out since the drill bit kept wandering to the side and I was afraid I would have a bigger mess than I already had. So I have just left it with the nylon plug installed behind the plug so if it leaks, it won't go anywhere. How did you manage to keep the drill from sliding off the center of the plug? The plugs seems like it is fairly hard, and tough to get through. Did you start with a pilot? Any info would help. Thanks.

When I fixed the same problem, I center punched the remaining rod slug and drilled a 5/16" or 3/8" hole. As the hole was drilled. the 1/8" mild steel core rod pushed into the heater tank. This rod was retrieved later with a small diameter extendable magnet. Once the hole was drilled, I used an "easy-out" to finally remove the remaining rod slug. To complete the job. I then had to flush the remaining chuncks and chips from inside the tank. Good luck!
