satellite television reception...

...hi everyone...

i am new to the group and new to RV-ing...my wife and i will be getting a digital sat dish soon and dont know which system is best...we have been told to use the tripod mounted dish and 40 foot cord to assure line of sight regardless of where the rig is parked....any advice is appreciated in advance...

I have a satellite dish on my roof that automatically finds the satellite if there are no trees in the way; however, I also had my coach "specially wired" so I could hook up an antenna on a tripod. First option for me is roof antenna, it I can't get anything, I pull out the portable dish and tripod.

Lots of tradeoffs in any RV decision.
I have the roof mounted dish that can turn360 degrees many times and never has to "unwind" the wire inside the dish. It has worked great on the road. On long drives, CNN and the Weather channel help to make the time go by quickly.
I did also get a ground based dish, no tripod and I have used it several times when there have been many trees around the coach. Tripod is not necessary, but nice. I saw one guy who used an old steel auto wheel as the base and he used a regular house-dish mounted to a small pole that was bolted to the steel wheel.
The prices on the roof mounted dishes have started to come down a bit, so if it's possible the "in-motion" type really offers lots of advantages.
