Tow Vehicles

Recently purchased 2005 CC. Looking for a good vehicle to tow. What are the choices that I have?

We tow a Mercedes ML 500. Also check your the new Jeep. We think its an incredible piece of machinery and will tow without any special modifications.

Look on line at either the FMCA or Motorhome web site. Hondas, Accuras, 4 wheel drives, Saturn L300, Almost everything else with either a drive shaft disconnect or a transmission lube pump. TWI 11731

You've already received some good advice ... mainly to sit down and determine what type of vehicle you *need.* Once you do that, check Motorhome Magazine's Dinghy Towing Guide at http://tinyurl.com/2qmkt . Also consult with Remco at http://www.remcotowing.com in case you decide on a particular vehicle that's certified as "non-towable," 'cause Remco may be able to make it towable.

Whatever you do ... do NOT automatically believe what a sales person tells you. Have them backup their advice with *manufacturer's* info. And, by the way, even service managers aren't necessarily knowledgeable in this area.
We tow an all-wheel-drive Subaru Forester, which I consider the ideal, do-anything, toad for many reasons. But it's only flat towable in stick-shift form, which is fine with me 'cause I hate automatics .
By the way ... "tow vehicle" usually refers to a vehicle doing the towing.
What you're looking for is commonly called a "towed" or "toad."

We started out towing a Honda CR-V. Lots of CR-V's being towed around the country.

We now tow a Honda Pilot ... wanted something a little bigger. Pain to put the base plate on, but tows very well. There is a speed restriction and a routine you must go thru to lube the trans.

Ordering a new F150 soon, and hopefully will be able to tow that if properly setup.

Hi,

We tow a GMC Envoy and it does great, nothing to do but set the 4 wheel drive switch to neutral, put the gear lever in park and lock the vehicle. The Envoy does not have a locking steering wheel so you do not need to leave the key in the vehicle. however it is heavy, around 5000 pounds so you need a tow hitch that is rated at 10,000 pounds and you need 4 wheel drive. Most SUVs that can be towed on all 4's must have 4 wheel drive. When you go out to check a vehicle for towing, check the owners manual, it will tell you how to tow it if it is towable. We have towed 2 Jeeps and the Envoy and we would not tow anything else. The new Jeep GC can also be towed and the one I test drove last week looked and rode better then the Lexus.

We tow an 02 Jeep liberty. It was easy to mount the tow bar and all that needs to be done is put the differential in neutral and the tranny in park. The car weighs around 3900 lbs, a little heavy, but we have the full off road package including fuel tank and differential protection. We are towing it with and 04 Inspire and have been very happy with the performance of both.

We recently looked at the new 05 Jeep Hemi. I agree that it drives beautifully, comparable to our Mercedes ML.
I've heard many conflicting "reviews" from people that own late model Jeeps - many saying they are crummy and always falling apart. We owned a Jeep Cherokee several years ago and really liked it.
Therefore, I'm posting this to ask this question: People owning jeeps within the last two model years - how has the maintenance been on the Jeep and how have they been doing? I appreciate comments.

I've been towing an 03 Liberty for about a year and a half. I've essentially had no problems and have performed the routine maintenance. The Liberty Limited is anything but "crummy."
I, too, have been interested in the new GC Hemi, after all -- you got to have a Hemi!

I continue to have a series of intermittent electrical problems which were never found perhaps over a dozen in all. THe battery running down, headlights coming on at night, horn blows without cause, and so on. They repeat just not enough to have a competent shop be able to correct. Also the drive train is not up to par with most other vehicles out there. I had the transfer case rebuilt at 39K and the rear axle rebuilt at 42k. The front axle is now making noise. This appears to be a fairly common problem for the Grand Cherokee's, several other owners have had the same issues.
With all that said, when it works I'm very pleased, it's just keeping it working reliably is the issue.

Have you looked at the Honda Pilot?

We also just drove the Hemi JGC. We tow a 1999 GC Limited with 74k miles on digital odometer. Found there was not enough "new" in the 05 Jeep that demanded our unit be replaced. Actually, our rig seems that it has more interior room. No major mechanical issues. New Jeep has better road manners.

Our '00 Jeep GC had the same gremilns, lights turning on while in the garage unattended, etc. Took it to Jeep and they replaced some switch in the steering column and we haven't had that problem since. We did have the driver's door automatic locking mechanism replaced because we couldn't unlock the door with the remote. Ours has almost 70,000 miles towing and almost 50,000 driving and other that routine maintenance and the above problem, it has been a great vehicle. I would like a new '05 GC but can't justify getting rid of this one.

I don't own one, but based on 675,000 responses to *Consumer Reports* annual subscriber survey, brake problems are experienced much more than average in Jeep Cherokees '96-'01 and Grand Cherokees from model years '96-'03.
Unless the braking system has been improved since then, I'd expect this problem to continue.

Other problem areas experienced as the years go by include transmission and electrical.

Overall, they give the Grand Cherokee a below average reliability rating overall.

I'd rely on *Consumer Reports* reliability surveys much more than "asking around."

I too have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and love it------V-8 with 4wd. Only two complaints;
1) Gas mileage only about 14 city and 18 hwy, and 2) brake rotors warp easily. Car is very comfortable and very peppy. Also, very easy to hook up with Blue Ox system. I have the M&G brake system which is trouble free. I wish however I had put the air hookup on the curb side away from the electrical hookup. Two coiled lines next to each other have a way of tangling with each other.

I owned a 93 GC and it had 130,000 miles on it when we traded. We now own a 04 GC and they both have been great auto's.
