GenSet CD8000 Maintence

Hi Folks,

Changing the oil and filters on the GenSet are quite easy. The oil filter replacement is a NAPA gold 1134. The oil pan holds 4 qts.
However, changing the coolant is another thing. The generic book says 6 qts, but only 2.7 came out, leaving 3.3 in the engine block.
Googling Power Technology Southeast, Inc in Leesburg FL gave their number 800 760 0027 and Bill the service tech gave the 'not so good' answer: their is a another pepcock on the exhaust side of the engine.
I took another look at the installation. It appears that the job of removal is about impossible - the GenSet enclosure is 19" high while the Compartment is 17" high. Did CCI install the generator from the top before the floor was installed? It just maybe that the cross pieces that support the generator base would have to be cut and removal would be from the bottom. My concern is the hoses connecting the engine to the radiator - if they ever start leaking, it will be a costly repair. In fact, anything failing on the inboard side, will lead to a costly repair.

I finally figured out a way to get the remaining coolant out of the engine block, but it took a long time and a few calculations.
It is important to note, as the book states, that only long term antifreeze in a 50-50 mix be used.

Anyone had a similiar experience?

Where is your genset located? Mine is in the first bay behind the driver's side front wheel.

I forgot to mention that that is the location - first bay behind the dirvers seat bay - same as yours.

Hi Lyle,

I forgot to mention that the oil for the GetSet is SAE20 or 10W30 CC/CD/CE or better (for diesel engines) and not SJ (for gas engines).
It was difficult to find - had to settle for Chevron synthetic 10W30 from Walmart - 5 qts for $20. 15W40 weight oil is not recommended.
Now here is the method for getting a 50-50 mix of 'long term' coolant into the generator: Drain the radiator and leave the drain open. With the radiator cap removed insert a garden hose (male end cut off) into the radiator fill neck; adjust the water flow so a small trickle is coming out of the top. Run the generator until the water is clear coming out of the drain at the bottom of the radiator. Stop the engine and let the water run for 15 minutes more.
Now let the radiator drain, refill with pure coolant (2.7 qts) and run the engine for 15 minutes; this results in a 2.7/6 ratio or 45% coolant or 1.49 qts of coolant in the engine block; for a 50-50 mix, drain the radiator again, now add 1.51 qts of pure coolant and the rest with water.

Remember the manufacturer states that damage will occur if the generator is run on pure coolant.
