BOSTON RV SHOW REVIEW

Yahoo Message Number: 14430
Just returned from a three hour trek thru the BOSTON RV SHOW that started Saturday and goes thru NEXT SUNDAY.

Opinion:

Tons of travel trailers and fifth wheels. More low end entry class A models and really just three dealerships with high end diesel stuff.....Crossroads with Country Coach, Martys with Beaver and American Coach and Arlington with Newmar, had a Mountainaire 45 and a Dutch STar too, but no NORTHERN AIRE that I could find. Also, there were two dealers with TRAVEL SUPREME models to display.
It appears that there is a trend toward what I would call CLASS B DIESEL LUXURY COACHES. Several brands now have what I call the FED EX Trucks, freightliner with Mercedes engine available. Also, DYNAMAX had a big diesel unit with the motor in front, the TRUCK front end, not the BUS front end. I think the industry calls them diesel PULLERS. No room at all in the bathrooms of these units. Dont think there is much of a price difference. The big difference is the FUEL MILEAGE.
Costs 12 bucks to park and 8 bucks to get in and 3 bucks for a hot dog that appeared to be cooked the last time the Celtics won the NBA championship.
Suggestion: Go during the week if your sked permit, since the crowds were getting unbearable about an hour into the shows opening.

Just my opinion folks...........form your own!

Friday evening (5.30PM) I went into the Pleasanton (Alameda County, CA.) RV show.

$8 parking. $8 entry (Senior rate)

Not very impressed. This was my fourth visit to the Pleasanton show and doubt I will bother to go again. Very few customers at 5.30. Lots of sales people mainly talking to themselves.

My biggest bad impression was the appearance and attitude of the sales people.

Yes, it was cold (by CA. standards) and I know they had been there for hours but to be quite frank I've seen better dressed homeless people. This may seem petty but if you are selling high end diesel pushers starting over $200K I think the major dealers should require a reasonable dress code.

I know some sales professional understand this but unfortunately non were in attendance during my visit.

It wasn't just one dealer that was this way, it seemed pretty pervasive.

A local high end car dealer understands this. They are selling BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar and Porsche. (not to me!) When I was there while a friend picked up his car I noticed that all the sales men wore suits and ties and the ladies also suitably attired. Clearly they are used to selling high priced cars to people who expect high standards.

Why is it some people selling high end homes on wheels think like street corner used car salesmen?

Sorry for my ramblings, I just think dealers need a big change of attitude about how they sell these high priced coaches.

I noticed the EXACT SAME THING IN BOSTON..but didn't say anything since I make my living selling and dont have the right to determine how others dress. But, except for the stores that had the reps all wearing the same colored sweater, the dress code of MOST of the reps was disgusting. However, the Country Coach folks were wearing suits and did look presentable.
There was a company there selling conversion vans, and I commented to my wife that the sales reps all looked they were out on WORK RELEASE from the local jail!

WHat do others think about this?

I honestly couldn't care less how a motorhome sales person is dressed. And I expect them to not care how *I'M* dressed. Note my sig block.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm more interested in a salesperson knowledge of the product rather than if they have a suit on. When was the last time you saw someone driving a coach in a coat and tie. At Guaranty all the folks wear shorts and those funny pajama looking tops. Doesn't stop too many folks from buying there.
We are presently at Beaudry's in Tucson and had a couple of salesmen latch onto us when we checked in at the RV park. What an experience. Had no intentions of buying a new coach and told them that. One thing led to another and we ended up looking at a few coaches, which was okay as I always enjoy checking them out. When they found out I wasn't interested in a new coach they showed us some stuff that wasn't as nice as what we have, just newer. Finally showed us a 2000 Affinity that was really nice. We talked about it a little and then asked about the price. There was a big sale sign in it with a price about $100,000 higher than normal. When asked they said it was just a starting point. Later found out asking price was actually $120,000 lower on their website. They last thing they told us was they would see what the other locations had and talk to us the next day. Were waiting for them to recontact us so we could get more info on the Affinity. Never heard back. They did pass me in thier golf carts and acted like they didn't know me. Too bad. By the way, they were very well dressed.
Just my 15 cents worth as we head to Florida with a slightly damaged coach after a big rig sideswiped us. That was the reason we stopped at Beaudry instead of Palm Creek. Thought maybe they could work us in on an emergency basis to fix bent awning arm. No such luck. No where near as accomidating as Guaranty service dept. They are always squeezing emergencies in.

After posting the story of my experience here at Beaudry's I was visited by Tom Tremethick from their staff. Very nice fellow.
Spent over an hour talking about the situation and ways to keep the same thing from happening to others. Would highly recommend anyone who needs to look for an RV to talk to Tom. BTW, he has some screamming deals on new Allures. We are definitely going to see him on our way back. Who knows, maybe a new coach. It's amazing what a little one on one can do, and hopefully more folks from CC and dealerships will look at our site and react to situations that come up in the group.

Since this industry is growing so fast, I think there is a big disconnect betw the dealers and the mfgrs. Unfortunately, the mfgrs dont realize that THEIR REPUTATION is also determined by the attitude and reputation of the dealer.

Now, I am sure there are those on this list that say that the dealer does not back a difference, and that they are only interested in the "hardware," but these are probably the same dodo birds that buy a new coach every year, get killed with depreciation and dont even know it! But they have the newest, biggest and nicest, so they are happy! Who am I to be their judge!

Hi John and Merilee,

I have a friend that tried to do business at Beaudry's. He made a deal, but when it came time to sign the papers $ 25,000 had been added to the price because " the sales rep didn't have authority to quote that price." Needless to say my friend left in a huff. The salesman stopped by my rig the next day and wanted to deal with me on the same rig my buddy had tried to buy. I told him there was no way I would deal with them after the treatment they gave my friend. He shook his head and said that wasn't the first time the office had done that to him.
This isn't heresay as I was present when the "deal" was made. I have subsequently heard that Beaudry is known for such practice.

Caveat Emptor.

Last Class Reunion, I had worked what I thought was a good deal on an Allure with Beaudry. It was decided that the deal would be completed at the FMCA rally. Got there and the deal was changed, big time.
I'm still driving my Inspire. The only reason I was looking at the Allure was because it has a 10,000 pound CCC compared with my 3,000 pounds in the Inspire. When fulltiming...oh, well. I just have to be careful. >

Serves me right for trying another dealership than the nice folks at Guaranty in JC.

Jean and I just bought an 05 Intrigue at Beaudry. We worked out the details via the internet and on the phone. The price was set and the documents signed before we arrived for the pickup.
We had no problems with their figures and no last minute adjustments were made.

Sorry to hear about the problems people have had with Beaudry. Our experience was very good. I guess the truth is... get it in writing if you want them to hold the price. They wanted the deposit too. Any time a coach stays on the lot (without a SOLD sign) pricing can be adjusted until the papers are signed. Capitalism at it's finest.
Higher demand will drive prices up. Even the hint of demand will drive the managers to hold off on discounting.

We would recommend them again...

Carol,

We dealt with Beaudry and couldn't be happier. They gave us a price, stuck to it, and have been there after the sale when we need them. Maybe you we buried (by your dealer) to the point that no one can make a deal on your Inspire. But I will tell you that if anyone can make a deal on an Allure for you, it would be Mike Pratt. He is awesome and he will keep his word with you. His number is 520-609-2795. That is his cell and he is very good about returning call also. Currently I know for fact that they have quite a few late model pre-owned coaches in stock. The reason I know is because there are about 4 or 5 people in our SWCC club working with him. He has at least 2 Affinities, a 2003 Magna and one Lexa (that has decent work repair history!) and some Intrigues and Allures.
If you are serious about trading, Mike will do the best by you, IMHO.

Thanks for the input, Jean and Russ and Candace,

I did deal with Mike; he came up with the deal of the century for me. When I got to the FMCA rally and spoke with the finance guys, they changed the whole deal. Mike did not return any of my phone calls after I talked to him once during the rally.

Your advice about having it all in writing from the beginning is great and something I should have done, Russ and Jean. I'm happy your experience was a good one.

What I should have done is gotten the deal completed while we were at the rally. Oh, well, such is life...full of interesting lessons.

Carol,

We purchased our previous coach from Guaranty. Happy as a clams if we could have done it again, but they didn't have the CC we wanted...off we went looking on the internet... thus Beaudry. Price was right and the deal was closed. I would care to bet that both dealerships are OK. Good Luck with your search.. when the time comes
