Unhappy with headlights - new thread 2

Hi Folks,

Had to remove some rubber junk to get the lightbulb assembly out - its push in and turn to the left for removal. The bulbs are the 9004 12vdc 65w/45w.

The high beam is 65 and the low 45. Only one filament is lit at a time. I looked at bulbs in the JC Whitney catalog(690-J09). On p.138 you can purchase non-DOT replacements either 100/55 or 100/80 in their house brand or Streetglow for a few bucks more. The issue is, will the headlight assembly melt? I am going to try. Those Taiwan assemblies look pretty cheap and the lense always has condensate on the inside.

For the fog lights, on p.139 a dual fog/driving light is offered (optux by Hella), item K. Looks like they may be close in dimensions to the original fog lights.

Fred, I put the PIAA Bright White replacements in mine last weekend. The difference was like night and day... literally. You can also get the Sylvania Silverstar for about the same price. I would NOT do the 100/80 deal, as the wiring size won't handle it for an extended time..

Certain PIAA groups have very low reliability - about 6 months.

Fred,

How would you go about replacing the lense? It appears these babies were put in to stay unless you have very long skiny arms/hands. My right one has always had moisture in it and it defintely needs replacment.

I would like to change my lights as well to something better. But, not really sure of what the lenses, wiring and fixtures will take in the additional heat from higher wattage bulbs. So, look forward to hear what you and others discover.

Fred, your coach and mine should be the same design.

You can purchase these after-market head light assemblies from a Body Shop Supply store that handles after-market (Asian-built) parts. They are pretty common. Country Coach uses them as OEM. Lots of other motor home mfg's use them. They are about 50% cost of Ford OEM parts. Many have the "DEPOT" brand stamped on the lense.
Most of us are dealing with the 90 and up Bronco and Ford pickup series.
If the outside is just cloudy, try an acrylic polish or mild cleaner/polish before replacing them. It cleans them up in most cases.

Thanks for the information. The lenses assembly is pretty poor in materials, CCI had to rubber gup the rear of the connector so the bulb assembly would not fall out. The lenses itself barely meets SAE requirements. I on a hunt with the neighbors vehicles to see who has the best low beam throw - my wifes Saturn LS appears to have the best so far. Problem would be to fit a bezel arond it.

Have a 98 Intrigue, 10636, can anyone tell me what headlights I have? I need lenses, buffing does no good, inside is very dull. None of the manuals I have show what the headlights are off of. Someone told me it was from a Bronco but didn't tell me the year. Does anyone have this problem? Any help would be appreciated. Jim W

Headlights for your coach are F series Ford pickup up through 1991. I bought a couple off of ebay for about 75.00 each with chrome trim.

Another suggestion.....See if you can find a body shop that saves parts catalogs. They have a parts book referred in the body shop trade as a "crash book". They show OEM numbers and a lot of pictures of body parts. This can narrowed down to ID what you have. Jack, is correct that CC was using headlight frames from the Ford trucks for several years.

Jim, On my 03 Intrigue the head lights are "Ford Bronco (1987-1991) TYC Part # 20-1608-94-1A" (passenger side). I had one fail and that is what CC sent as a replacement. You might want to google that part number and see if you get any hits.
