I'm currently in Tucson (Beaudry), one month into a six month that will take us across Texas to Corpus Christi, around the Gulf to New Orleans, then north up to Wyoming before heading west to return to Washington.

While in Tucson I'm thinking of purchasing either the Verizon wireless card or the T-Mobile card and subscribing to their mobile service.

I know with Verizon I can get "broadband" speeds only in select cities, but Verizon claims I will get 56 kbps speeds in their service areas.

T-Mobile doesn't promise any "broadband" speeds, but is also less money.

Any users of either or both? Any actual experience with the route I plan to take?

Hi Jim,

There are 2 yahoo user groups you might consider joining - rv communications and internet by cellphone. Both will tell you the Verizon is at the top of the heap.

I have the Verizon aircard and am relatively happy with it...would be happier with an internet satellite, but such is life. I've never been in an area where I could get broadband service so don't knwo how it will work. But have gotten around dialup speed most of the time.

Jim, where are you staying in Tucson? We have a AT&T wireless card and it is great. We also know someone who tried Cingular card (right after the merger) and they had a hard time configuring it. The AT&T card was free (after the rebate) and we signed a 2 year agreement. It works almost everywhere at at least 2x dialup speed. Dale Hollick 05 Affinity 6370

You might also try a wifi hookup...for only about $30 at Best Buy you can get an adapter kit with program. Beaudry in Tucson has free internet hookup via wifi amd all of the Flying J stations are now equipped. Also, you'll find more and more rv parks installing wifi to accomodate the rvers. I'm using it in Gold Canyon RV (for a monthly rate) amd getting great service.

Both Yahoo groups will say Verizon because that's all they've ever used - at least this is what I learned after spending 4 months lurking on those boards!

If you need cell phone access WHILE you are using the Internet you will need to get an air card - Verizon or (my choice) AT&T/Cingular.
I've been on AT&T for 6 months and am very pleased.

I have ATT WS but did not take their internet service because is is charged separately, Verizon just charges minutes from your regular WS service and has better coverage per the RV folks.

I'm not knocking Verizon, but as you point out, one limitation is that you need to use your phone as a modem and can't use it as a telephone during that time. The other limitation is the need to only be on the Internet after 9PM and on weekends to use your "free" minutes. The original poster didn't provide enough information on their requirements I don't know is adequate for them.
I have a number of friends using Verizon this way and they find it a fine solution. I need simultaneous voice and data (and have trouble staying awake after 9PM :^; ) so it wasn't a viable solution for me.

I do dispute claims on Verizon having better coverage although I suppose you are limiting it to using the cell phone as a modem and I have no experience with this. I'm not going to say they don't exist, but I have yet to find anyone who has used both AT&T and Verizon air card offerings who has claimed Verizon has better coverage. My own experience is solely with AT&T and I have found coverage around the country (even off the main roads) to be very good.

I've seen WiFi suggested in previous posts in this thread and have found several campgrounds who offer WiFi, free and otherwise. Most Thousand Trails preserves don't have WiFi and those that do, charge too much - $5 a day. That is why I went for the aircard. As a good friend of mine says, WiFi is the wave of the future, however and I look forward to dumping my aircard when WiFi is available - free- everywhere I go.

Also noted another post that the two good yahoo sites relating to connecting while Rving only talked about Verizon because it was the only one they had used. That is probably true. I've been reading and posting on those sites for a couple of years. When I started reading them, Verizon was the only reliable cell phone that you could use for getting online and their aircard was the first. I'm sure the ATT card is good; I am very happy with my Verizon card and with the service I've recieved from Verizon.

I have been succesfully using the T-Mobile aircard for 13 months.
It is $30 per month for unlimited internet access with no roaming charges. Speeds are acceptable and feel about like a dial-up.
Unlike WIFI, T-Mobile even works while moving down the road. We love ours and use it exclusively at home too. IMO, you can't beat it for the price.
