Drawers very hard to open or won't stay closed.

Yahoo Message Number: 15530
Just bought a 1998 Allure. Very good condition but one problem that really nags me and even more so my wife. The drawers with the exception of just a couple can't be opened without a major battle. In most cases my wife can't open them at all. I've removed the drawers and can't see anything wrong with the slides or the latches. Can someone tell me what I am missing?

Thanks
Ron

I have a 1997 Allure 40 and all the drawers are a little hard to open, my wife thinks they are hard to open. The only one I have a problem with is the large drawer below the refer, it seems to open when going down the road.

Ron, does the slide work without the drawer?I assume these are side mounted ball bearing slides. If the sildes wok fine without the drawer then measure the width of the drawer and compare it to the width of the opening at the sliders.if that doesn't help let me know.

Assuming the drawers are similar to my 98 Intrigue, the slides are made such that when fully closed the drawer rollers become seated in a low spot on the slides. This is by design (similar to boats) so they don't just glide open when you're moving. Try pulling up slightly on the drawer handle first, and while applying upward pressure, pull out. Hope it helps.

Ron,

If lifting the front of the drawer while pulling does not work, remove the drawer. You'll see a bent down pointed tab on the slide that is mounted to the cabinet. You can try "adjusting" the tabs and it may help. The drawers that won't stay shut you'll find the tab is bent back too far. Hard to open can be helped by bending the tab back a little more. I adjusted some to satisfaction. The ones that it didn't help I replaced. Purchased from CC. Measure slide prior to ordering as there are different lengths.

Worked for me.............

I had this problem on our 1999 Intrigue. The problem was the enclosure on which the slide is mounted was not parallel to the drawer sides and it would bind. I filed off just enough of the slide to clear. Also, as noted, the drawer needs to be pulled up slightly to open.

We splurged and had Davis Cabinets redo all the fittings on all our drawers in the rig...great thing to do! Now they all work nicely and don't come open when we don't want them to, either! Jan McNeill

Thanks Steve. From your info and some others it sounds as if replacement is the way to go. Looks like some previous bending and what I have also done is not helping.

Ron

I have a 2000 Allure with a similar problem. I found that the rear mount(s) on many of the rails were cracked or parts of the broken causing the rails to drop in the rear causing binding when trying to open the drawer from the center mounted handle. I found that if you can grab the bottom edge of the drawer face lift up with two hands and pull the drawer open, you either have a broken rail support, a rail that is not aligned properly or the drawer has more weight on one side than the other.

One of my improvement projects for the near future is to replace all the drawer guides with roller slides.

When my former 98 Allure started having drawer problems, I purchased 12 left and right plastic rear mounting brackets. When I picked up my 2004 Intrigue I had 1 left and 3 rights remaining. I am very thankful for the new drawer hardware. Newmar is using this hardware in their top of the line Essex, in the bedroom.

Sounds like all the models in this year range have the same problem: plastic fatique of the back bracket. We took one of the broken brackets to Home Depot and were able to match it exactly...bought a half dozen to replace those that broke and were about to. Problem solved.
