Diesel Fuel Price

Hi Folks,

Looking at the Flying J web site, I am curious as to what you think of the current prices and the trend. What would you suggest to get them lowered? I have emailed 3 months ago from the President on down to get a temporary 55 mph speed limit - no response; I wonder what, if any, a second considering would get?

As for lowering speed limits. Good idea. It was done in the 70s for conservation. Remember waiting in lines at the gas stations.. Lowered speed limits won't happen until we have gas lines again.

Well Fred, I agree a temporary or maybe even permanent reduction to 55 would save fuel and lives. I don't think the politician on either side of the aisle will do anything but blow smoke and blame the other side.
Fuel prices are high and will get higher, probably with no relief. We need to acknowledge that the world economy, namely India and China, are competing for the same oil we use.

The fastest I drive my coach is 60 mph and most of the time I hover near 55 because that is where I get the best mileage and because I try to follow the speed limits on my vehicle. I listen to the radio, to books on CD and don't get frustrated. I have never seen an accident caused by my following the speed limit or driving less than the speed limit. I don't impede traffic on interstates and the speed limit is 55 on two lane roads so what is the problem? So what if I slow up a little when I get behind a slower vehicle?
It is not hard to stay within the speed limit, you just do it. When the speed limit was 55, a lot of people still went 65, but that was less than 75 or 80 so they saved a little fuel. ;-)

Hi Dave

A few years ago the Fed. Govt. discovered that very thing, that diesel was cheaper than gasoline. Since it packs more energy per gallon than gasoline I guess they decided it should cost more. So they raised the Fed road tax to make it so. Political greed.

(I guess this is a political post as well as fact. Delete if you wish.)

If you look at our Interstate highways and the punishment they take from big rigs especially out west I can see the extra fee. At least in Arizona we don't have to pay that 10 cents. We are supposed to, if a motor home weighs over 26,001 lbs as posted on the pump, but my experience has been the retailers are to busy to collect same. TWI 11731 20043 Intrigue 38,350 lbs last trip.

An alternative that I have been very interested in for a while now, is hybrid-diesel engines. Cummins has developed and been testing a 400hp hybrid-diesel engine. It would double the current gas mileage you get now to roughly 15-18 miles per gallon. I have not been able to find out what the current status is with the development program. Does someone out they know what the status is? Or have any other ideas on how to improve gas mileage with new technologies?
I have tried to stimulate conversation about this before, in particular, with hydrogen fuel cell engines. I think the answer lies with engines that get much, much better fuel mileage because most us would like to continue with the lifestyle we currently enjoy, that is, comfortable big motorhomes and lots of traveling.

I checked the Cummins web site, they have 50 ISL hybrids running and 300 commuter buses on order. HP IS EITHER 330 or 280 on ISL. TWI 11731 2004 Intrigue

I'm with Andy. Dig til we see the daynight on the other side. Still haven't read a reasonable explanation for diesel pricing being right up there with high-test, since it is less refined. (I don't consider gouging the trucking industry a reasonable explanation) Maybe we have a petro-engineer in the group that can explain it to us.

Biodiesel would be a great substitute for petroleum based diesel.
It can run in most engines today and could become a US export. The price might be higher at first but at the rate that diesel prices are rising it might not be much higher. Australians are already running used McDonald's cooking oil in their diesels. The government needs to come up with better incentives for developing alternatives.
