Lack of EGT gauge on 370 ISL

I'm new here but after reading hundreds of posts am convinced that almost any question can be answered by the members on this board. Why is there no EGT gauge on these coaches from the factory? Does the fact that these are now electronic engines have any thing to do with it or should we have the gauge installed as another means of monitoring and protecting our investment.

Richard, I guess I'll have to show my ignorance. I'm on my sixth motor home, three of them diesels, and I don't know what an EGT gauge measures. Pleas enlighten me.

>In my younger days ( a long long time ago) I hauled freight in the midwest during
the summer months between college semesters. I seem to remember that there were only two gauges, the water temp. and the exhaust temp. gauge that were most important (air pressure gauge was important also but didn't take as much scrutiny).
With the older engines if the exhaust temperatures got too high lots of bad things could happen including but not limited to destroying the turbo, and melting various internal engine parts. I suspect the same could happen with today's engines but maybe the advanced designs and materials make them less susceptible to damage.

I asked Cummings that very question and was told that there is no need

for one. The computer will take care of it for you. If the temp gets

too high the computer will back down on the power to keep the EGT withing limits. They don't even disply it on their RoadRelay 4. The do let you see boost pressure, tran temp, eng temp, oil pres and other

things. Don't know if I like not seeing the EGT readings but they are

the one who will have to fix things if it gets too high.

EGT--Exhaust Gas Temperature. Like it says, it measures the temperature of the exhaust.
Electronically monitored engines are quick to start shutting down power, and thus reducing temperature, so there is really no need for an EGT. My Cat will first reduce power--which has happened (discovered the radiator was clogged), and if temperature does not go down, it wiull shut down the engine.

The electronic engine management system on the newer coaches pretty much eliminates the need for an EGT.
If you are paranoid about it, I suppose you can have one installed. I had an EGT on my airplane, but see no need for it on the coach.

Thanks to you and Roger for the answers. I had hoped that was the case but didn't know for sure. Isn't advanced technology great!

Why do we need an egt?
Evidently we don't.
