Satellite Internet Connection

Does anyone have any recommendations for a satellite internet connection for mobile use, I checked with Direcway and they do not have a program for RV/Boat applications.

Direcway is the satellite but others will provide the access and hardware...try someone like Groundcontrol.com

DIrectway recignises mobile aplications as: Fixed mobile bussiness users.
You will either have to become a certified installer or buy a Motosat Datastorm.

Try www.dustyfoot.com if you'd like a Direcway Tripod solution.
Although not strictly legal, the FCC and Direcway are not doing anything to stop the sale and installation of tripod based Direcway solutions for RV'ers. On the other hand, we have the Motosat solution and if you can afford the initial price of the hardware and installation, it is a great solution. You get automatic satellite aiming and you don't have to stow the antenna and tripod in your storage bays (they take up a lot of room). For more info, visit

You might want to join the yahoo RVinternetBYsatellite group, just do a search on yahoo groups and you will find it. A large group of rvers with most using the tripod set-up. At one time there were unscrupulous satellite dealers trying to convince rvers that the tripod satellite dish was illegal. Now, that has pretty much gone away as many of those same dealers have gotten into the tripod satellite business. Guess they wanted not only the motosat high end business but saw they could make a lot of money by selling the much less expensive tripod system. You can purchase the tripod system for around $1400 or so including all training required to set it up, most folks are able to set the system up in around 20 minutes or so after becoming proficient in the set-up. The cost of the motosat system installed is close to $5,000 so you can save a lot of money if you can deal with the storage of the tripod system.

Aircards are available from Verizon, Cingular or Sprint for your laptop. Anywhere there is a cellphone signal in the US you can hookup by wireless card. Each service has their own version. It is just a card that plugs into your laptop with a tiny antenna. Monthly charges are as low as $39 for 2 hours or $55 for 4hours or $89 unlimited usage. Most cities down have service as fast or faster than DSL. I have used one for six months and really like it. Cost is around $199 usually with a $100 rebate attached. You can make your own deal with your cell phone provider.

I use the T-Mobile wireless aircard and get unlimited internet access for $29 per month. Speed is like a fast dial-up. I've enjoyed staying connected on the road (even in-motion) for almost 18 months now.

Verizon aircards cannot be used if you are not accessing a Verizon cell. Spent the past few weeks unable to use my card because the campground was closest to a USB Cellular cell.

You can also replace the tiny antenna with a Wilson antenna to get better reception.
