cummins turbo charger noise

Yahoo Message Number: 16825
I have a '05 Allure 470 with a cummins 400 with a high piched noise from the exaust. The turbo charger was replaced by Cummins after the first noise was heard at about 12,000 miles. Cummins removed the intake

boot and observed sparks comming from the first stage intake fan. The new turbo charger has a simmilar noise but somewhat reduced in level.
I have heard that the industry has had problems with this in the past few years. Has anyone experienced simmilar problems?

Ken, we also have a 470 with the 400 Cummins. It does in fact have a slight whistle when the engine is at low rpm's, and has had the sound since new..... Cummins assured me that all units have the whistle, and that it's the "new" single vane turbo that they are using????....
I had the Cummings people check it at the CCI rally in Moultrie as well as at a Cummins dealer (without telling either about the other one checking it). They both confirm that a slight whistle is "normal".
I also had them check the fact that it smokes a bit a start up and at idle. Both verified that the latest mods were in for the engine and that it would be awhile before they updated....
If you find out different than the above, please let us know. Thanks

Ray,

Thank you for your reply. We had cummins replace the turbo due to "excessive" noise and after visually checking the turbo with the intake hose disconnected -- sparks were being observed around the fan.

The replacement turbo is making the same noise. My brother-in-law just took delivery on his new 470 Allure and we hear no noise from his. Our coach did not make this noise for at least 11,000 miles. We are currently at Buddy Gregg in Dallas and I have not heard the noise on other 400 cummins in the few days here.

Thanks again for your reply.
