Jake Brake Intermittent ?

Yahoo Message Number: 17124
I have the ISL 370 with the Jake Brake. Sometimes when I release the throttle, the Brake does not engage. Silverleaf shows that the transmission drops to 4th gear, but the red light may not illuminate.
It also reports the following fault: "ENG PID 121 4 Engine Retarder Status Low Voltage" If I "work" the throttle a bit, the brake may kick in. This is verified by the red light and the corresponding/added drag on the engine. I don't have a schematic of the system and was wondering if anyone does and can tell me what wire(s)I need to chase down to try and fix it. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Larry,

I had to replace the Jake brake on/off switch and also the diodes at the switch. You should have a circuit diagram with your coach that show the wiring of the switches. Ours was also intermittent, and on one trip stopped working. A new switch and the diodes cleared up the problem.

Thanks Per! I'll look into that. For some reson my book doesn't have that digram. I would think that the switch would be at the engine, not at the pedel?

Larry,

The switches I'm talking about are the actuating switches on the driver's side panel. I have the older style toggle switches, and when I started having problems, I figured they would be easy and cheap to replace. I've already had to replace a couple of the other switches, so that is the first place I looked. Since it worked, I didn't have to go farther!

Oh Yes! I did think about that after my reply to you. That part should be easy! Just wondering, if I may ask, where did you find the diodes? Thanks

I used diodes I found at my local Radio Shack, although they were slightly smaller than the original ones. They seem to work OK, and I carry a few spares just in case. So far, so good!
