Alaska Trip...Freedom 20 Inverter

Hello all .... it has been awhile since my last post. We have been enjoying Alaska and are currently in Homer AK. I noticed the recent discussion on the inverter and it brought to mind a recent problem we have while on the way to Alaska. The inverter stopped charging on both the gererator as well as shore power. Made it difficult to do dry camping especially since it was intermitent. After a few times systematically troubleshooting, I discovered that the control cable connector (RJ) on the bottom of the inverter was the problem. Road dirt creep into the connection. I had to remove the bottom plate in the compartment to get to the connector. Removed it and cleaned with some contact cleaner and it has been trouble free now for the last two months. Hopefully it will not be a problem again before I get back to Florida in September.

How are the roads in Alaska? We've heard some horror stories and some good stories. We're considering taking our 2004 33' Allure to Alaska next year but worried. We've been to Alaska twice (cruise and motorhome rental) and loved it. Please let us know what (if any) problems you have related to the roads there. thanks!

We went to Alaska last year in our 5th wheel and F550 truck. Other than the occasional frost heave; the Top of the World Highway from Dawson City, YT to Chicken, AK; and the Tok Cutoff, the roads were in better shape than the roads we have been on for the last three days. The US Interstates in MI, WI, MN, and parts of ND are terrible. We've had cabinet doors pop open, the latch on the closet door break, and bottles topple in the fridge. We had none of that in Alaska and our fifth wheel had no where near the suspension that our coach has. If you can travel across the lower 48 on I-80, I-90, I-94, or, heaven forbid, I-10 from MP 30 to MP 10 in Louisiana, you can travel anywhere in Canada and Alaska. Now, the only drawback is the dirt through the construction sites in AK and Canada but at least the campgrounds have RV wash stations. I'll be very interested in Jim's answer.

The roads are not as bad as I expected. There are sections of frost heaves and gravel sections. I have seen a number of coaches and towed vehicles damages. However, most of it was self induced.
Following too close to the vehicle in front and driving too fast are the most common mistakes. If I had to be on a schedule with limited time, I would not have even considered making the trip. The beauty of this part of the world is timeless and should not be placed on a clock.
