Air Dryer Cartridge Replacement

Desiccant cartridge replace is not simple. The dryer cost about $300 from Country Coach and should be changed every two years. We are scheduled to have the work done locally at a truck service center.
Not sure about the cost. I am wondering what others are experiencing when they replace their air dryers cartridge?

The last time I had mine done the parts were $166 and labor was $204. I had it done at a shop that services tour buses.

I changed mine about a year ago. I purchased a "reconditioned" desiccant filter from Sacramento Kenworth, for $47 +tax. It came with all of the O-rings you need. It isn't easy to change. My filter is located up front above the axle. The entire unit must be removed to change the filter. The filter cartridge is extremely tight (50 ft- lbs) and the aluminum base assembly casting is supposedly extremely fragile. I had the guy at Kenworth remove the filter from the base for me. He placed the filter in a vise and twisted the housing off....but it wasn't easy (He said some bad words). Anyway....it turned into quite a little, dirty project. Would I do it every two years, as CCI suggests? No way....5 years maybe.

Paul,

Save your money... The air dryers for our big trucks suggest the filter at 350,000 miles, 10,800 hours or 3 years. They also note the 3 yrs can be extended depending on service. You will hear all kinds of stories, but based on my experience as a trucker, my Allure will get changed at 5 yrs. Drain your tanks on a regular basis, I doubt you will ever see any water.

Since your coach and mine probably came off the line within a day of each other you might be interested to know I had mine done last year at a local truck service shop. I forget the cost because I had other work done (cam lube, slack adjustment check, Howard Power Steering repair). I had 75,000 miles on my Allure at the time.
The mechanic said that while the cartridge was OK, the timing was good for replacement. He also chastised me for not having the cams lubed earlier and told me I would probably need brake pads when I hit 150,000 miles.

Thanks for sharing your experiences in replacing Air Dryer. We all understand how important clean-dry air is to a coach. Brakes, leveling system and ABS (Automatic Braking System). Bendix offers a one day tech school that I am considering. Visit their web site if your are interested.

I called CC parts back to see if there was a core charge on the cartridge since there are re-mfg. cartridge availabe. CC said there was not a core charge for that cartridge.

The price seems to vary for this cartridge so check around knowing CC will sell you one for $293. CCI members get %10 off on parts.

Installing does sound like a pro should do the work. Safety and accuracy are important when it comes to brake work, right? I have an appointment tomorrow at a local truck service center.

My cartridge only cost me $78 -- cheap insurance considering the possible damage done by trying to extend the recommended service schedule.

Install update, CC sold me the wrong cartridge so the local truck service center (Tidewater Express, VA.)installed yesterday, a re-mfg cartridge from Bendix. I took about three hours total. I had to back over a front end pit. Better than jacking. The part cost $154. and the labor was $154. They did a leak test afterward and all work was OK. The head mechanic explaned how they get many calls from trucks on the road for service on the air dryer. They bypass them to get them going again only to get another call in the winter when the brakes freez up. The problem starts with oil from the air pump getting into the cartridge. That kills the cartridge and stops air flow and the truck.

I would recommend Tidewater Express Inc. to anyone traveling eastern Va. and in need of service. They are RV friendly and reasonable.
They have an air ride wrecker instead of springs. Otherwise your coach will a hard shaking.
