Checking rear tires

First off hi to all. We've been lurking in the background from somtime and decided to come out into the light. We just got a 2006 Inspire 360 which we love. This is our first Class A having come up from TT's and a 5th wheel. I'll admit right here that these tires scare the crap outome, their bigger than anything I've ever had before (11x22.5)! I've checked the tire closer and see that the dates run anywhere from 03 and 04. I really don't have an issue with the age.
My main question is just how the heck do you check the air in the rear tires? The outside tire has a valve stem that points inwards (okay no problem as I have a dual headed tuck tire guage) what about the inner tires? I checked both sides of the coach and can find no valve stem on either inner tire. The only thing I haven't done yet is craw up underneath the coach to see the actual inside of the inner tires.
Guess that I might have to do that soon as we are getting a Doran Pressure Pro kit soon for the coach tires as well as the Jeep we'll be towing. So here's the question....how the heck do you check in inner tires of the rear dually coach? I might be old and slow but if you use small words I just might be able to learn how. Anyway, thats for the help. - Don

Usually, the inside tire valve stem is 180 degrees, or as close as practical, from the outer tire valve stem. Check it out. Macke 2003 Magna # 6277

You usually have to get down on your knees with a flashlight and look for the valve stem that is in the center of one of the handholes. It took me a time to find them at first. I did have to get a new pressure guage. My old 45 degree guage wouldn't work on the inner duals. I had to get one at a truck stop that has a straight guage and a 45 degree.

We had valve extenders put on at Lazy Days. Without them, I would not check pressure as often as I should. Our sales guy was an over the road trucker for years, and he said he would show me a trick. Didn't get that far with him ...

Takes about one minute to check both duals, and no leaks so far.

Not everyone buys into this plan, but it works great for me.
We also have Smart Tire, but it has never worked completely so I check manually every so often.

Don,i've had a Doran system for about 18 months, was completely happy until recently.I lost a sensor, so i took one off my trailer, which you delete the positions, then install the new sensor, well can't get it to work, and the tow is hit or miss, even used the extension antenna, and still had trouble picking up all wheels. Trying to contact Doran to get this problem solved.

I use the Alcoa valve extensions. They are easy to install and keep a check on to make sure they stay tight. I also use the Alcoa straight head pressure gauge that I picked up at a CC rally a few years ago.

I use the valve extensions also. They work great and make it much easier to check the tire pressures. I also use a CO2 tank with a high flow regulator to fill when needed. It is portable, always available, travels well, and has enough pressure( 200 psi ) to inflate a tire like the toyo's to over 100 psi. Not that many compressors can go that high and I found the air available on the coach will not go much above 105 psi and it takes a long time.....

One of the problems we have with our 05 Magna is that our Smart tire goes to sleep when we sit for a for a week or two. So when we start out on a new trip we stop at the first rest stop, turn the engine off and then restart and the Smart tire comes right up.
I also understand there will be 2 more Warranty Bulletin's coming out for the 05 and 06 C-13s in the fall. One from Cat to correct the miles per gallon errors on the Silver Leaf and one from CCI to bring the Allison Trans.temperatures down on mountains and in heavy traffic. Don't know exactly when but should be this year.

That makes sense. I know the sensors turn off shortly after stopping, but the whole system seems to go whacky. The wheel assignments are all messed up. It seemed to fix itself, and maybe we stopped and powered off like you said.

We still have one sensor that doesn't work, but 7 out of 8 ain't bad.

Last week, I saw a tire valve extension that nearly ruined an inside tire by deflation. The 6" stem extension had worn 1/3 of its diameter away against wheel. The coach was 9 months & 26000 miles from new.
Hard to see how so much material had been worn away without exposing the air passage in stem.

Lucky owner was shown problem by mechanic doing tire rotation work. The owner went to 5 places looking for a new extension!

You should always use a rubber grommet with extensions to keep them from vibrating against the wheels. I've used this combination on five different coaches over nineteen years without a problem.

John/Terry, when you say 'Smart Tire has never worked completely' what do you mean? I am thinking of installing this set up, but don't want to spend $1000 if I can't rely on it.

We have not had a good experience with Smart Tire, but its not the system me thinks, but the dealer, etc.

When we picked up our Affinity, the Lazy Days "pre delivery glance" did not pick up the fact that the ST system was not set up. I did my best to set it up and a subsequent visit to LD finished the job.

They replaced one sensor, and it is still not working, but I think the wrong address has been programmed. All the other sensors seem to work, although I am still uncertain about some of the battery voltage readings (low).

An earlier post here from a knowlegable CC owner stated that the ST system "goes to sleep" when sitting for some period of time. This seems to explain my situation, as it did not display the tire layout correctly, then suddenly it started working. I must have had a shutdown in there somewhere, and it restarted the system.

I am not real impressed so far, but it may not be a Smart Tire problem.

I still check manually every morning, but I think the Smart Tire system is a great idea if it works.
Don't use my situation as a reason to use Smart Tire or not, they are most likely completely innocent here. Circumstances most likely are the culprit.

We had the gen 1 ST in our Intrigue, have the new gen 2 in our Magna and it is much better. The gen 1 would never pickup the right rear inside tire... I even tried extending the antenna and placed it underneath the coach, but that made matters worse. With the better remoting in the gen 2 product the problem is solved. It is a good product at a fair price, but that's just my opinion.
