Air dryer help!

Hi all,

We have a 1993 Affinity with a 3176 Cat, which we have owned for the past 8 years. At a rally the other week I was told the Air Dryer on the engine needs to be changed or serviced every year.
Although I have had several "full services" done over the years most of the time I just have an oil and lube at truck stops, so I really don't know if it has ever been checked. We are in Gillette Wyoming, and about to head for Oregon, so I took the coach in for a service and Air Dryer change/service at the local Cummins/Freightliner dealer. They told me after the work had been done that they had never seen a dryer like mine and didn't have the parts, so nothing was done.
I would be grateful if anyone has any knowledge of this dryer and how or where it is serviced or replaced?

My Cummins shop told me the truckers run the dryer filters for hundreds of thousands of miles before changing, and that I should not be concerned about changing mine at 45K miles.

I just replaced our Bendix air dryer last month with 30K miles on an 01' Intrigue. CC send me the wrong filter but my Truck Sv. Center got the correct part in an hour. Trucks do go longer but at a price. The Truck Service center told me they most of the road service calls they get are from trucks that stop when the dryer stops air flow. The Air pump on the engine pumps fails and oil gets into the air and cloggs the dryer. The service call will bypass the dryer to get them rolling again. Then, winter comes and the brakes lock up or Freeze up, then they replace the dryer. We know clean dry air is the life of our leveling and brake system. Dryer replacement should be on your maintaince list and depend upon on your milage and comfort level. Bendix recommends 25K miles or annual. For me I think 25K millage or three years max.

I've asked CC technicians about the air dryer service interval several times at rally seminars and at the "Service" 800 number. The usual response is a puzzled look and a different answer (guess?) every time.
Only one time did someone actually investigate before calling me back with an answer: 60,000 miles; no time interval. I'm thinking maybe 50,000 miles just to be on the safe side.
The Coburg, OR Coach Care service price list (rev 1/04) suggests "RV manufacturer's recommendation" or 30,000 miles / 2 years. Listed costs for air dryer service: $126.95 (Bendix), $161.95 (Wabco), $226.95 (Midland).

When I tried to order air dryer service parts from CC last month I was told my coach had a Bendix air dryer.

I suppose service intervals may vary for different brands.

After sifting through a lot of conflicting service interval recommendations I decided to follow the Dynamax Chassis Owner's Manual maint. schedule: 50,000 miles (no time interval specified). Service now would give us about 5 years "peace of mind".

The service was done this week at a Rapid City, SD truck service facility - Godfrey Brake Service & Supply. The cost was $471 ($328 for parts, 1.5 hours labor). The air dryer on my coach is the Bendix AD-IP 12V model.

The Owner's Manual schedule lists desiccant cartridge replacement and several (labor intensive?) "Disassemble/Inspect/Clean" tasks to be performed. The actual service performed was: desiccant cartridge replacement, heater/thermostat replacement, and purge valve replacement. The last two items cost added about $200 to the parts cost, but probably reduced the "disassemble/inspect/clean" labor cost by quite a bit.
