Cubs Spring Training

Dear forum members,

My wife and I retired this past year and plan to head to Arizona to spend some time watching the Cubs in spring training in March. we have never been in this part of the U.S. and would like some advice on nice campgrounds to stay at in the Phoenix/Mesa area.

Dave and Donna; We have stayed at the Gold Canyon Resort and Golf in Gold Canyon (Apache Junction) These towns are on the outskirts of Phoenix/Mesa area. I believe that the Gold Canyon Resort is about 15 miles East of Mesa. Easy Freeway access.
As you may be aware, the entire Phoenix/Mesa/Apache Junction/Gold Canyon area is continuous urban sprawl. When you get to Gold Canyon, you are on the outskirts of the Metro Phoenix area. You are just starting into Jack Rabbit Country and are at the base of the Superstition Mountains.
We like Gold Canyon Resort because it has a large club house, Par 3 Golf, extra clean paved streets, etc, etc. Lots of folks own Park Model units and they mix the RV'ers in between Park Models. Nice folks to mix with.
If you go, be sure to see Berleen's Arizona Opry in Apache Junction. They have been performing there for 25 years or more and offer a great Dinner show. Also hit the big ole Swap Meet on weekends. Great stuff!
We have spent the past three years there during the month of January and will be there next year.

Hi Larry,

Did you walk into the Superstitions to Weaver's Needle? Forty three years ago, Apache Junction was a gas station and the trail to Weaver's needle was quite a hike, prospectors would pull a gun on you if you got too close to their claim - story has it that the sun shone thru the eye of the needle of this tall monolith on the spot where the gold was hidden at the right time of the year.
