Bryce Canyon Campground

Has anyone stayed at Ruby's Inn in Bryce Canyon? Another other suggestions? We're looking for a place close to Bryce for a week stay before we head to Zion River Resort in Virgin, UT. It's only 100 miles from Zion to Bryce but we don't want to spend all of our time driving back andn forth.

Earlier this spring we stayed at "Red Canyon RV Park" which is at the intersection of Hiway 12 and 89... about 14 miles west of Bryce.

Are you aware that there is a tunnel on Hiway 9 going into Zion before you get to Virgin from the East? Don't remember the clearance, but it was low enough that we didn't try it in our '04 Allure 36'. You might want to check it out. We stayed outside Zion at Mukuntuweep.

Yes, I know about the tunnel. I have that section of the road marked as "Avoid" on our mapping program. Thanks for CG suggestion.

Ruby's Inn is really really cool. The campground is large with plenty of space to maneuver around.

Bob: There is a lot of country to see in that area. Ruby's Inn is probably the closest and best for Bryce Canyon. If you are staying there for a week, may I suggest taking the Dingy and driving over to Escalante and Boulder on Highway 12 that leads to Torrey and Capitol Reef Ntnl. Park.

It's a beautiful drive that we always enjoy this time of year.
For a centrally located park, the pickins are slim. There is a couple of Mom & Pop Campgrounds around Glendale and Orderville but they may be closing down soon for the Winter.

We had the Escalante trip on our list. Our original plan was to stay in Moab for a week then head to Bryce and Zion via Torrey.
Unfortunately due to circmstances beyond our control we're about a month behind our original plan. We plan to do Moab, etc on the way back north in the spring. Thanks for the suggestions, I think we'll plan on Ruby's.

When visiting the area don't miss Kodachrome. There is only dry camping there, but it's one of our favorite places and will be one of your, too, if you are like us and appreciate the off-the-beaten-path sorts of areas which are not over populated, developed nor utilized. Lots of hiking trails in, around and over the top of large boulder formations. Take a GPS when you walk as there are few trail markers and getting turned around is possible.
If our trip from Texas back to Indio took us through the area, we'd be stopping again.

Hi Bob,

Consider the following drives between Moab and Bryce Canyon.
After visiting Bryce and Kodacrome Canyons continue on Hiway 12 east to Escalante. Make that your home base for awhile at Broken Box RV Park. Trips from there to the petrified state park (about 1 1/2 miles to the west), to the BLM headquaters for maps (about 1/4 mile to the west), south on the Hole-In-The-Rock trail road to several slot canyons (Peekaboo, Spooky, Dry Guilch - there are many more at 40 mile ridge), a good 5 days alone for this activity, next east to Calf Creek and hike into the lower Calf Ck falls (2 3/4 miles one way), Upper Calf Ck falls (1 mile hike one way), north to Boulder to visit the anizazi ruins and eat at the Tibet restaurant. Another trip is up to Boulder and then east on John Burr Trail and south to Bullfrog at Lake Powell where lunch or dinner at the Anizazi Restaurant will well be remembered (100 miles one way). You are in Capitol Reef park and the John Burr transition from going east to south to Bullfrog takes you down a steep switchback with some of the best rock colors, the trip south then takes you thru Water Pocket Folds with four distinct horizontal color ridges.

When you have had your fill of red color rocks rising several hundred feet, then you are ready to head further north to Torrey and then east to the northern end of Catitol Reef park.
We spent two weeks in Escalante and will make that a annual return exploring the many slot canyons, natural rock bridges, indian ruins and the north side of Lake Powell - it doesn't get much better than this for western US. Rick Green (one of 7 guides recognized by Utah state) has a guide service at the east end of Escalante and will tell you places to go. We headed south thru Hanksville and Hite at Lake Powell and then east to Blanding, south to Bluff (Two Rocks Traiding Post for the best in Navajo rugs and baskets, the Museum is tops) on to Chenelle and Canyon Dechelley(sp?), and south to Winslow (had the lowest diesel price at Flying J at the time). Winslow has the La Pasada hotel - go inside for the self guided tour. A Mary Coulter masterpiece (was closed for 40 years) with many paintings of the steam engine era, but the paintings depict the politics of that time. We stay at Meteor Crater about 11 miles west of Winslow - one of the best RV parks I've been to, very new looking, reasonable priced, free WIFI and a Subway.

We drove through Bryce today and checked out Ruby's. All dirt sites, lots of trees, 1% occupied right now, believe it closes for winter at end of month. Camp ground looks good.
Zion River Resort will not disappoint. We are there now. In site 37 and would rate this resort a 10.

The tunnel is safe for large motorhomes and tour buses. They block traffic to allow these vehicles to travel down the middle of the road.

We really appreciate the information. I think we're going to limit our stay this time to the Western half of Utah as most of the campgrounds in the middle are starting to shut down. We'll be going back up through their in the spring and do the rest of the trip.
