I have a recuring odor ( not very sweet) coming from the over flow opening in my bathroom sink. I have sprayed bleach into the opening several times with temporairy results. Any one have any good ideas for dealing with this?

Dave:

Vinegar and Baking Soda works wonders on the drains. In the particular incident you describe, I handle it this way:

1. Add 1/;2 to 1 cup of baking soda to the drain.

2. Close the stopper.

3. Add about a cup of vinegar down the overflow tube. (I use a turkey baster or funnel with a flexible spout.

4. Let it stand for at least 30 minutes, even after all the bubbling stops.

5. Fill the sink with water and let it flush the stuff out.

Chuck, you gave your formula for curing a smelly drain. Does it also help a slow drain?

It does it all. Best if the drains are treated regularly with the solution. Just one more thing for that ever lengthening check off list. I do all the drains including the shower.

Walt, we had a 'slow drain' even after always using the baking soda/vinegar drain cleanout frequently. I finally took the drain assembly out of the bathroom (the stopper) and I couldn't believe how much GUNK was on it...had closed the lumen to about a half inch opening! Now, we leave it 'free' so we can pull the stopper up frequently to clean it...no more slow drain!

Thanks, Jan. I was about to remeve the stopper and check it when I saw Chuck's remedy. Now I think I'll do that and add the baking soda/vinegar procedure to routine maintenance schedule.

I removed the stopper and the drain was plugged pretty good with hair. I removed that and now have good drainage. Five minute job.
