smart wheel problem

I wonder if anyone can help with a problem I'm experiencing with the windshield controls on the smart wheel. The normal on/off controls don't work. I can get the intermittant wiper function if I hold down the button and pray. Then I can only turn the wipers off by turning off the ignition. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem? Any other way to turn the wipers on/off? Thnaks for any suggestions.

Tony,

Yes, I have also had a problem with the smart wheel on my Inspire.
Mine involved wipers coming "on" when I made right turns. Not the same as you are experiencing, but close. Mine was solved by replacing the steering wheel column spring. That spring is responsible for making electrical contact with the smart wheel controls. If it is not adjusted just right, or if it its broken, it can cause all kinds of wiper and cruse control problems. I don't remember the correct name of the spring but it is not the normal spring. This spring is wraped in a coil and is somewhat flat. If you wish I will take a look at my maintenance and repair folder and give you some more details.
