I love these Ford - Chevy debates. It seems that whatever a person is using - it's always the best. Some of you may remember that Motorhome Magazine did a test/review of shocks back in April of 09. Testing Koni, Bilstein, Sachs, and Road Kings, Road Kings came in either third or fourth. Motorhome Magazine's method of testing, while probably not an exact science, was probably better than most folks "seat of the pants" method. You mileage may very.

I have a shock leaking oil so I want to replace them. Did we ever get a consensus of opinion on what to use?

If you have already installed Koni that should be covered under warranty. If not, replacement with Koni red would be my choice. Adjustment @ 1 full turn up from soft. Koni ships the shocks at min. setting.
I'am impressed with your already known front axle weight which tells the forum you have spent the large sum of $9.00 to weigh the coach.
Do you need them installed ?

I like the Koni FSDs, but they don't fit all coaches. There has been discussions on Road Kings for much more $, but I haven't tried them.

John, lots of opinions, no consensus I saw on one brand over another. I'd put on the cheapest properly rated RV shock. Konis are good shocks overall, lots of folks swear by much more expensive Road Kings - actually neither are inexpensive. Bilstein makes good RV shocks as well. The key is getting the correct shoclk for your rig. Koni worked directly with CC, not to say the other companies can't make a good suitable shock.
Have fun keeping score will all the recommendations. I vote for Koni.

When I purchased my Road Kings, the dealer made a mistake which resulted in my shocks bottoming out. I had to send them back but in the interim, I put Koni adjustables on the front which were recommended to me by Henderson's in Grant's Pass, OR. In the meantime, Road King replaced the front shocks so I now have a pair of shocks with approx. 3000 miles on them which I don't need. I drive an "07 Allure 470 and my front wgt. is 12,900 so I am sure they would work for you. I paid $166.00 each and I would sell them to you for $75.00 each plus frt. Henderson's recommended these shock because they were adjustable. If you are interested, call me @ 512-257-7503. I live in Austin, TX. and my name is Rod Reames.

I had the coached weighed by the tire dealer (for free I think) wheel by wheel when I replaced the front tires (Michelin) 2 weeks ago. They let me get in the pit and see the bad (original) shock.
To Rod Reams: Thanks for the offer but I would like to get them now as I am leaving soon for this year's adventures. I will get in touch with you if I change my mind.
To Bob: You mention getting the correct shock was important. What is the correct shock?

After much discussion, I replaced the original Konis with the Koni FSD shocks. I saw no improvement in ride quality. I am now going to go with what I originally wanted and install the road King.
Anyone want to buy a set of slightly used FSD shocks for a '02 Intrigue?

Have you talked to Koni directly? I thought I read something about a change in the recommended shock for the front end of the heavier coaches. Koni gave me new shocks for the front when I complained. I am not at my coach and I can not tell you which shock I have and I may not be as heavy on the front axle as your coach. The Road King shocks are obviously good quality, but, you shouldn't have to pay that much to get a satisfactory shock.

I went with the Road Kings, very pleased. If going with Koni's, be sure they are the SP3 generation of shocks. Many SP2 generations are still in stock, and being sold at the same prices as the SP3 generation. I spent hours (my wife claims I spend a bit too much time doing my 'research' projects:)!), and if you search my posts you will see my process, as well as my perception of driving with different combo's of the SP1's, SP1's on setting 4, Road King's and the Motion Control Units.

Hi - I attached a link to my first post install perceptions. Along with some of the Koni SP1 generation shocks, on different settings. Also note that I did install the Road Kings along with front/rear Motion Control Units. I may have been satisfied with only the Road Kings, but trust the recommendation of Henderson's Line-up, that said the sub 30K Lbs MCU's work well with the IFS and good shocks.
After another 3.5K miles on this combo, remain very pleased with the handling and comfort while driving in all conditions.

Is there an "expected average" for how long shocks last? (I understand it will vary according to use/road type). I am getting new tires this spring and it just occurred to me that they should check the shocks and perform an alignment at the same time...

I also went with road kings and am very happy with the ride. I had a lot of up down motion up front which stoped with the road kings. They are a very well built shock with great factory support. I had a guy named Lonnie at the factory help with part numbers.

I do not know about an expected average, but my Koni shocks are still running fine at 16 years and 86,000 miles...on California roads no less.
