Bahia Kino & San Carlos Mexico

Anybody have experience driving down to Bahia Kino and on to San Carlos on the Mainland side of the Gulf of California? We have been to Baja so many times we are looking for a change of pace, and wonder what this area is like. Anything to look out for?

Piece of cake, San Carlos is probably about 325 miles from Nogales. We are guides for fantasy and we led a trip there last February. Great RV park, ElMirador.

We were at the Western Horizon Resort 10 miles out in the desert up from Kino Bay last year. The divided Toll Highway to Hermisillo is good for Mexican Stds. But still watch out for BIG holes in the Road. There is a by-pass around the north end of hermisillo (that we missed). If you do the Sonora Only plan in Tucson. It really helps in getting across the border and has a route around downtown Hermisillo. The Road to Kino Bay is stay as an arrow. Not much off road edge space. Sometimes an 8 to 12 inch drop off. We had the rear wheels of our Coach and our towed sideways from dodging a Bus who played chicken with my driver's Mirror. Not much in way of quality resorts in Kino Bay, like the El Mirador (which has excellent food too) in San Carlos. If you go to Kino 1st, then is a short cut just east of the town the gringos call "Calle Douce" that saves some distance but I would not take it again. Too bumpy and lots of Holes. If you stay on Hwy 15 all the way to Guyamas/San Carlos you will have no problems. There are Pemex fule stations. The diesel was $1.78 per gallon when we were there last Feb. I preferred the town Guyamas to the Tourist trap of San Carlos. Guyamas is 'Real" Mexican, not a bunch of gringos from up north....

We finally decided we could live with a couple scratches if that was what it took to see Mexico. We just got the Fantasy book, picked it up at Lazy days. We are heading west in two days.
