Vibration

When I bought my coach it had 6 year old Toyos on it so the 1st thing I did was replace them with new XZE tires. I have a vibration at 65 mph in the rear of the coach and gets more noticeable as I go faster.
I do not know if it was there with the old tires. I have had the tires balanced and tire truing machine on the tires. The few people I have talked to say it can be hard to find the vibration in the drive line but I am ready to start throwing money at it to fix it. Any ideals on where to start or a company in Texas that can analyze it? Thanks

If you change tire pressure, does the vibration change? I had a pick-up that had that problem and it turned out the circumfrance of the tires was not the same. Your Koni shocks could also be a fault. Have them set at the full max position and see if things change. Ask the previous owner if there was aproblem; call Service at the factory and ask Kari, the receptionist.for their name ande number. Where are you in Texas?

If the vibration started right after the tire change i woulkd check to see if the wheels are mounted correctly. some wheels are centered on the hub others use the studs to align the wheels.

Re: [Country-Coach-Owners] Re: VibrationWe had almost the same situation as mentioned below on our SOB Freightliner chassis. The wheels and hubs did not match exactly. Once FL figured out the problem, it was corrected and we had a smooth ride after that. Thank goodness ours was not too bad, but we knew others who spend a lot of $ trying to figure out the problem....new tires, balancing etc.etc. Finally the problem was discovered and fixed.

Brad;

About a year ago I had to replace a U joint. If I was coasting there was no vibration, on acceleration there was lots of vibration. At highway speed there was also vibration.
It appears someone never greased the second fitting in the joint. So, only two arms of the joint had grease and the other two were dry.
Ran me about $70 for a new joint and about two hours of labor.

My 2000 Allure has developed a vibration that starts around 45MPH and essentilally stops at 65MPH. CC suggested checking the ride height and it was off on one side. After correcting the ride height the vibration is still there. Any suggestions?

Is the vibration from the steering wheel? Or 'through your seat'? Or is it a sound and/or visible shaking?
If the first, then check the balance on the front tires and the rest of the front suspension. If the second, rear tire balance is a common culprit in speed related vibration. If it is not loose front suspension or tire balance, check the drive shaft. After that, it gets difficult to determine.

The problem is primarily a rumble in the coach accompanied by a high frequency vibration that can be felt and seen in the steering wheel.
The steering wheel vibration occurs from 45MPH to about 50MPH while the rumble continues up to about 65MPH.
Thanks for your response. Checking the drive shaft is my next step.

Don't forget to check your tire runout on all your tires. Runout should never exceed 60 thousandths or you will get vibration.

Sounds almost like you have 2 separate problems. Any vibration in the steering wheel which is not also present in the rest of the vehicle usually is due to something in the front suspension (tires out of round or out of balance, misallignment, something loose, or perhaps bad bearings). Of course, in your case, the 'rumble' may be 'hiding' the high freq vibration in the rest of the coach.

Does the frequency of either the vibration or the rumble vary with speed of the coach? With the speed of the engine? Or do they pretty much just appear and disappear as you pass over their speed range?

O.K. I'll show my ignorance....What is tire runout?

The rumble starts and remains fairly constant over the entire range
fromm 45 to about 65. I checked the u-joints adn found they were tight.

Vibrations can also be caused by the rear tires being out of balance. None of the coach manufacturers balance the rear tires. When we picked up our 05 Magna it vibrated and I insisted on CCI balancing the rear tires which they did and Les Swab also took one tire off and replaced it because it was out of round.
Since then Lazy Days has also replaced one front tire which was out of round. I hate Toyo tires but when the 05s came out that is all CCI was using.

Dear Daffy Duck;

Runout is the measure of a tire roundness. We found out that our vibration had nothing to do with tire balance or drive shaft universal joints or ... but that a couple of tires were more than 60 thousandths out of round. When we fixed the runout problem, the vibration disappeared. My guess is that you've got the same problem. If your tires are new, the manufacturer may authorize a warranty replacement. Otherwise, you might consider having the tire shaved by a reputable tire or RV dealer if the runout is not too severe. Lazydays and Josams both do tire shaving to make the tires perfectly round. I'd also have all the tires balanced while they are removed from the coach to check the runout.

Try checking ride height. If this is off by a good amount, it will change the angle of the drive shaft....causing a a vibration and or howl in rear end.

Max....You've got that right! I had some ride height issues when I first purchased my coach (used 2-1/2 years ago) and if the rear was dragging low because the ride height didn't come up, that drive shaft would howl. I eventually raised my rear ride height to a little above spec (7") and no more noise. I kind of wondered if others had ever experienced that same thing. Now I know.
