A better A/C filter

I recently went searching for a "better A/C filter" at Home Depot and Lowes and some local hardware stores. My original factory filters were getting quite stretched and not very effective in filtering the dust. I found a great replacement that does a better job of filtering the dust AND it also has another really great benefit... it makes the roof A/C significantly quieter. If you care to know the details, read on...

The filter I purchased at Home Depot has two layers... the first is made from a black plastic woven material not unlike the original filter that came with my Dometic roof A/Cs. The second layer is a light blue color and acts as a superior dust trap. The product is 100% washable, so it has the same easy care as the original filter.
The product comes mounted in a heavy plastic grid which I removed and discarded. I then cut the large filter into the same size and shape as the grill covers on my A/C unit by tracing the shape onto the blue side with a black magic marker. Since the size of the filter is designed for larger home A/C units, I easily had plenty of material to cut 2 filters to fit my roof A/C units.

Now, I not only have cleaner air, but the noise level of the roof A/C is about 10 db quieter! Try it -- you'll like the results... it is a quick, easy and effective way to make your coach more livable!

The only reservation I have (and it may be not be an issue...) is I wonder if it restricts the air flow significantly enough to harm the AC? This could be a catch 22...

Otherwise this would be excellent! I often wondered if there was something better.

The filter is a full flow non-restrictive type. If it is kept clean, the air flow is as great as the original filter.

Excellent! Thanks so much for sharing. I am going to write this down for my next opportunity to go to HD. Not many of those out here in Van Horn, TX... It is so dusty out here, this will be an improvement over this old filter.

Bob, are you saying that we have a filter on our roof AC unit that needs to be changed? We've had them "serviced" each year, but nobody ever mentioned that they changed a filter.

Hi Jan; When you remove your grill on the A/C unit from inside the coach, there should be a thin flimsy rectangular woven filter about 14 inches by 8 inches in size. The dust accumulates in these filters and they need to be vacuumed about one a month during heavy usage.
Washing them in the sink in a little soapy water after vacuuming them makes them like new. But after a few years, they get really loose and hardly filter any dust at all. That is why I purchased the new ones from Home Depot. I can't explain why your unit would not have these as all the A/C units I have seen have filters for removal of dust from inside the coach when circulating the coach air.

Ah...so that's the filter you were talking about. So far, haven't had a problem with ours after cleaning them, but shall keep your idea in my mind...sounds like an excellent replacement for them.

I liked your idea of a better A/C filter, but have been unable to locate said filter at our local (Placerville, CA) Home Depot. Did the filter you found have any name or manufacturer indicated on it?
