Inspire Cat C9 Oil Pressure

Yahoo Message Number: 22357
We have a 2006 Inspire with 3900 miles to date. Manuals state 35 - 90 psi is normal range but no reference to engine revs. At cold startup pressure is 85-90. After 50+ miles pressure initially dropped to 40-42 at 1500rpm x 60mph cruising. CC said this was "about normal" but a little low. Caterpillar checked pressure to 45-48 at 2000rpm static, but dash gauge still showed 40-42.
Latest 470 mile round trip run to Pismo Beach this weekend showed 38-42 psi at 1500 rpm, which increases to 45 when backing off on throttle, then drops back to 38-40 under load. Tickover shows 20psi.
Engine and tranny temps were 180-190 as it was cool and raining.
Earlier data put out by Kari shows his ave pressure is around 48-50psi during a hot desert trip.

I do not like cruising pressure being only 3-4 lbs over minimum particularly on a new engine in cool conditions (What happens in real heat?) We are heading to Las Vegas in three weeks.
Question - Apart from Kari's data, is 38- 40psi still "normal" for a new C9?

Are any other C9 users seeing similar pressures, better or worse

Have you done an Oil change yet? I am in exact same situation you are in.
Inspire, Cat C-9 4000 miles. I changed oil at 2,200 miles. It was easy to do and I think the pressure came up a hear but can not prove that.

Hi Darold,

Thanks for your reply. Seems we have a comman concern. I have not changed oil yet. Actually already arranged to have 5000 mile oil and filter change next week at 3900 recored miles as we plan on a 1100 mile round trip to Las Vegas May 4th and want to see if oil/filter changes improves PSI, especially when running at higher air temps. Also clean out the new engine gunk.
Would be happier seeing 45-55psi as Kary does.
Note - My rigs oil pressure does increase to 55-60psi for very short periods at higher revs (2000-2400rpm)in lower gears, but 95% of time we cruise at 55-60mph on 1500rpm and pressure is only 38- 40psi and appears to be dropping from earlier 40-43.
Will keep you posted on way to Vegas!.

Keep in mind that Kary is giving you numbers that he obtained electronically from the engine thru the silverleaf. If you are comparing numbers that you are reading off of your analog gage on the dash, there may be some discrepancies. My analog gage and my silverleaf do not read the same. My silverleaf reads higher. The silverleaf is more accurate because it is taken directly from the engine/ecm.

Hi Kevin,

So how much variance in oil PSI readings do you or Kary get between the dash analogue gage vs. your Silverleaf readings. e.g. 10% or 40psi analogue = 45psi on Silverleaf?. Do we have to buy a Silverleaf for piece of mind!.
Thanks,

Tony & Pat D.

I really could not tell you about the oil pressure gauge. I have given up on these guages and only monitor the VMSpc on my lap top.
The gauges are just useless in terms of accuracy and also in terms of visibility, particularly at night.

All of my temperatures and pressures vary greatly from the gage to the silverleaf. I noticed this problem when I first bought my coach and CC had no solution other than to rely on the silverleaf. As for the variances, I don't recall because I stopped believing the gages over a year ago. I just hope my silverleaf never gives me a problem.
