Back up camera

Back up camera We have had trouble with the pix on our back up monitor/Pioneer system. The pix will look just fine then get very washed out. The only way I can describe it is like the aperture (or lens opening) would stay wide open and let too much light in. Then without any reason, it will go back to a good pix. We've had the connections tightened and it still does the same thing. Doesn't matter what the weather is, temperature is or if it is sunny or cloudy, or if we hit a bump in the road. It just changes from being washed out to a good pix. on it's own.
We're at CC having work done and we were told the Pioneer system and the back up camera aren't compatible, but unless we want to get rid of the Pioneer system and get a regular back up camera monitor with some type of camera controls, this is normal. Also they said the heat will change the pix, but this can do it when we first turn on the coach and camera so heat is not the issue. There are several other folks here and no one seems to have the same problem. They have the same Pioneer system with no problems.
Anyone else been told this?

Don;t rule the pioneer system itself, there;s not a lot here to troubleshoot, the camera cable and Pioneer unit. Thinking any camera should be compatable with the Pioneer unit as long as the interface is correct.
Temperally setup another cam off the unit to see if problem follows, this would rule out the unit.
Was thinking about the new Pioneer product myself DVD, GPS, camera interface etc... all intergrated in one unit with no wires hanging around, currently using the street Pilot III.

Mike, before you decide on the Pioneer GPS unit, check it out. My experience is that it is not the best navigation system. No where near what Garmin is. It's not as accurate as it should be, will get lost, is not very user friendly setting up routes, will not store future routes, doesn't give warnings for turns until .7 miles, has no provision to navigate for anything but a car.(No provision for truck, bus, etc.)and so forth. So far, calls to Pioneer support have gotten the response "that's the way it is" with no desire to accept input about errors etc.

The other features seem to work nicely...

Agreed to the negative aspects of the Pioneer Nav system.
Not much good.

We have been guided 1-200 miles the wrong way and been given very bad "time to destinations info" AND the same 'Thats the way it is" from Pioneer support.

The Copilot system is one that is MUCH better. As are many others.

My BU camera went out. I get the little green on lite and the rear camera green lite but no picture. Anybody had an issure like this and do you know what the problem might be? It is the Intec system. I have wiggled and tapped and no results either. Connections seem fine.

My bu camera keep going out when ever I really needed it like it had esp. I checked connectors on display all ok. It would come back when ever it felt like it and worked fine for a day or so. I explained to friend who is master electrician and he said if you checked one end you have to look at the other. If there is a easy way to get to the back of the camera I have not found it. I might pull the screws on the shroud on the outside and see if I can get there from the outside.

I have had problems in all three of my CCs. In each one there was an access panel in the back wall of the wardrobe closet in the rear of the coach. it is held on with 4 screws and grommets. Every time it went out I had to access the cable coming from the camera to an in-line plug. Unplug and plug back in and it has always started to work again for some unknown period of time. It goes so often that I no longer replace the panel. I just leave it open for quick access. Tried cleaning the plug and it didn't help much. My guess is that there are low voltages involved that should not have a plug in the cabling. Some day I will take it apart and replace it with a terminal strip.

Let me tell you about our "wonderful" experience with the BU camera.
In May, we had to leave the coach with CC Service because service time exceeded expectations (how about that for something new?) and we had to drive the Tahoe home to Chelan, WA, to meet a previous committment to fly to East Coast for 2 weeks. During the 3 weeks we were gone, even though the coach was plugged in to 110V (at least when we arrived back in JC), someone had TURNED OFF THE BATTERY CHARGER switch on the Link.
So, the house batteries were nearly dead (below 11.0V). When we started up to go home the BU camera was inoperative. Nobody will admit that the low voltage probably caused the camera to fail, just a heck of a coincidence.

And now, CC doesn't have time, nor willingness to help fix this problem. We are sent to a local contractor to troubleshoot. $770 later, we know the BU camera connections are OK, the camera has failed, a new one is installed, and we have a big hole in the rear cap (about 5" diam.) because the new camera is not the same size as the old. Then off to Guaranty for $840 of body work & paint.

So I hope your connections are loose,

Mine does that some times, usually when it's been on for several hours, BUT, not always. It seems to recover if I shut it off for a few minutes then turn it back on. Don't know if this is the same issue as yours. I miss my Sony in my SOB VERY much. Much better picture and contrast although I had to replace the camera itself once at $mucho dinero.

Mine did the same thing but the problem was on the other end. I removed the eyebrow over the dash and located the yellow RCA connector from the camera to the stereo/screen. It was loose. I slightly crimped the female end to tighten connection. Re-connected and the thing has been perfect for over two years.

My back up camera has been a problem since the coach was new. (2004 Allure, #31068) It will fade to black at times. Other times it will return to normal when I hit a bump. Other times only the top 1/2 inch is color the rest is black. I have had it to the dealer, to the company several times, all to no avail.

Next time you are in Tucson make an appointment with Chris Snyder at Beaudry. He is the CC guy and finally fixed mine by re-wiring the entire harness. I had been 11,000 miles, to 7 dealers over a 2.5 year period to get this fixed. Chris finally got it.

Remove the RCA pin connectors at the display and at the camera. Strip the wire carefully and splice the center conductors to gether and the shields together but isolate the two from each other. Your problems should go away. TWI 98 Allure, and now 2004 Intrigue 11731

I too had similar intermitent problem and after accessing the connection behind the "panel" in the closet and just unplugging then reconnecting it all has been fine! Allen and Virginia 30694 '02 Allure 36' full time for 5.5 years

Do you have the Pioneer display unit? I went thru the same ordeal for over a year. After exhausting all of the wire and RCA plug connections, I noticed that the screen would sometimes go blank even sitting still with very little movement of the coach. Sometimes, a slight tap on the display unit would bring the picture back. I spoke with the pioneer rep at the rally in Charleston last year and he replaced my display unit under warranty. I have had no problems since then.
