Buzzing when charging house batteries.....

Yahoo Message Number: 22606
We have a loud buzzing from our high voltage box in the main bay underneath only when we hook up to shore power and need to charge the house batteries. Once the batteries are charged it goes away. We get this when we have been dry camping and come home and upon hooking up to our house ti starts. Anyone have this issue? We have a 2005 Inspire.

Thanks!

Hi Kary,

Same here. Has been that way since we purchased the coach new in May 05.

I did not think this unusual. Instructions state that there is a 2min 20sec delay before high voltage box cuts in.
The low buzzing tells me when power is connected ok. We had a similar low humming sound from the inverter on a Winnebageo we had, so did not think low buzz on Inspire unusual.
However I have not noticed it stop buzzing when batteries are charged.

On our coach the buzzing is barely audible, even when standing in the coach directly over the power supply. Maybe my hearing is going also!.

On my CC '01 36 Allure I find that my battery charging system hums louder when the batterys are more discharged. I believe if I know my stuff that the charger "works harder" when the battery needs more charging.

Greetings all,

Kary:

You said that your system hummed when you returned from dry camping, until the batteries were fully charged. It would seem that your charger/inverter (in a different bay??) is drawing a fair amount of current, but it

shouldn't be - - unless your alternator was not charging up your house batteries as you drove home.

I had that exact problem with my coach as I drove it across country after I bought it in Junction

City. There were two problems: a failed oil pressure switch on the engine and a mis-wired solenoid in the second-to-last passenger side compartment (near the chassis batter kill switch. It is simple to check if the alternator output is making it to the house batteries: check battery voltage with the engine off, and check it again with the engine running. If it is the same voltage, you have a problem.

T&PD:

You indicated your (2006) coach number is 51445. Was that a typo?

These are two seperate issues.

What you are hearing in the first issue is not the converter/charger you are hearing the 60 cycle humm that the solenoid makes in your power switcher (gen or shore) that is why it does nor will it ever totaly go away. However you can open the area where it sits ( In my 37' Country Coach 370 DS it is under the bed over the diesel engine next to the power distribution center.

Mine bugged me so I inspected it. The box is metal and so is the lid. You can a) make sure the screws are tight on the lid and b) you can slip something, a tie wrap, a penny something behind the box to firm it up and the sound should deminish some or almost all the way.

As a former electronics tech I can tell you it was not needed to energize with 120v, most powerswitch boxes energize via the genset.

It has something to do with the delay circutry and the power distributio center.

Inverter chargers can also hum under load or if charging a low battery. However they are much quieter than these darn noisy power switch boxes. Its more with the way coachmen installed them.

My charger is outside in a storage bin where this once noisy switch "should" have been placed.

In a worse case scenario you may have to TURN OFF ALL POWER, UNPLUG, NO GEN RUNNING and open the box and tighten all the screws that hold anything ( relays, boards, to the wall etc.) The power switch in my older tiffin allegro never made a peep and it had about a 2 minute delay.

I am new to this forum and glad to have found fellow country coach owners.

Good luck.
